You’re stressed when you carry out actions that differ from your values. If you’re a peacemaker who takes up arms, for instance, your duties as a soldier go against your principles. When your actions assail your convictions, your heart cries, “No!” You don’t want to do anything that flies against your ethics, yet circumstances conflict with your needs.

You may determine you don’t succumb to ‘ethical’ injury. Nonetheless, perhaps you’re mistaken. We all carry out behaviors that don’t match our principles. Lissa Rankin, M.D., says she suffered moral damage during her early career as a doctor. She saw patients who required more time than she could give.
