Your EMAIL list is like a pile of GOLD Coins
Why you should treat your email list like a protected treasure
I was reading an email response from an artist sending a continual unsolicited email to one of our staff emails.
The staff member was requesting that the artist NOT send daily unsolicited emails to that account.
When the sender was questioned and offered tips on best practices to sift their list for non-reactive subscribers and given advice on how to nurture their relationships, the artists’ reaction was very rude and uncaring filled with ego.
Instead of apologizing and offering to change the address listed, the attitude was filled with entitlement.
What could have been an opportunity to check in with that subscriber and offer them other options to stay in contact turned into an exchange of negative vibes and uncaring reactions.
Definitely proving that this artist doesn’t value their subscribers and perhaps even looks at them with disdain.
I wanted to note that this artist has a habit of only sending emails pushing their agenda without showing any sign of care for nurturing a relationship with their subscribers. The artist never comments or supports social posts and the only time we hear from them is through their mailers.
The content of the mailers is always asking for something and never offers content that gives something valuable to the audience in exchange.
It made me think about how artists may view email mailers as a way to push their own objective in front of people and I wanted to comment on this.
Perhaps this first-hand perspective will help you understand what’s missing in your own attempt to nurture your audience and turn subscribers into super fans.

Look at your friendships like a stack of gold coins. You should NOT spend them quickly on frivolous things or you will not have them when it’s important.
Instead, you should take care of them, protect them like a treasure and invest a little time in growing that wealth instead of throwing it away with abandonment.

The best email mailers check in with the subscriber in a friendly and nurturing way offering a thoughtful mix of value sprinkled lightly with the call to action objective but then clarifying how that gives back in exchange.
Best Email Recipe for Success..
- Check-in with an inspiring message or interesting short story (don’t waste people’s time, only email something of value)
- Explain your clear objective for the email (call to action)
- Offer a reward that matters to your subscribers. People love being appreciated so always tell them what you can offer in return for their time and continued support.
This is a successful recipe that has worked consistently to optimize the reaction of your subscribers and it ensures that you continue to build stronger relationships.

Just as a gold coin increases in value over time, It’s important that you care for your friendships with that same level of personal investment.
Great ideas for rewarding your audience.
- Move the call to action to your social pages so you can give back to those susbcribers by taking an interest in their social content. People love to see that their social posts are valued and acknowledged. Take the same amount of time you invested in creating your email and invest that in responding to your subscribers on social media when they react to your email.
- Call out first responders. When you see activity after sending out your email, do something special for your first responders like shouts outs in your stories or something they would value.
- Respond: There’s nothing worse than when someone send you a mailer and then drops off the face of the earth. If a subscriber takes time out to reply in some way, you are obligated to respond. You have asked for something and opened that door so it’s your turn to give back once that email wakes up that contact.

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, YOU ARE A LEADER.” — John Quincy Adams
Important rules to live by..
- Never start something you don’t have the time to finish especially when you have asked for someones time and attention.
- If you ask for something, you have to be willing to give something in return.
- Treat your relationships like precious gold coins that grow in value over time invested.
- If you can’t take the heat, don’t start the fire. When you send out an email, you need to be able to stick with the task and see everything through.
- Let your heart lead, not your ego.
- Treat peoples time like a precious resource.
- Lose your feeling of entitlement, you are not entitled to another persons time so if you are asking for something, always clearly state why it’s important and what you are willing to give in return.
- Relationships take time to nurture and require double your time and energy so focus your efforts on building solid relationships with people you value.
When you see strong personal brands managing large fan bases effectively, keep in mind that they have started and nurtured emotional and valued movements over long periods of time.

It’s through years of invested time: messages, consistency, supportive actions, empathy, social engagement, stories and expressed journeys that serve to nurture solid relationships that influencers truely rise to become leaders of movements.
You will never accomplish that level of influence with out a committed investment in the people you want the most from.
Good luck with your email journey. I hope your inspired to write better emails and invest your time in your gold coin relationships.
