Your Best Self Can Learn To Overcome Setbacks
Our response to setbacks demonstrate what we value
It is almost a certainty that you will experience setbacks.
You can count on it.
How you handle setbacks will define who you are as a leader and as a person.
It may be especially challenging during the pandemic as new and unforeseen events complicate your situation even further.
Lesson to Learn
Our work and life situations involve setbacks and disappointments.
How we respond indicates who we are and what we value.
If we respond with compassion and thoughtfulness, we will help others, and ourselves, better deal with finding a solution to our challenges.
Setbacks are another opportunity to learn new things about ourselves and the world around us.
Answer for Me
Setbacks are challenging for me.
Even after all these years, a severe setback leaves a pit in my stomach.
I tell myself that we will figure out the best response.
My experience reminds me we will find an answer and move forward.
However, it does not stop me from going through the same cycles of shock, grief, frustration, acceptance, and proactive response.
The better I am at managing this personal impact, the better I am able to find an appropriate answer.
Action
When you have a setback, pause to give yourself time to assess the situation.
Let yourself feel the natural responses we all feel.
Slowing down at first will provide you with the time you need to assemble the inner strength and external resources to successfully deal with the challenge.
Daily Habits
Pause, assess, and determine your next good step forward without the need to solve it all at that very moment.
When experiencing a setback, be present to the situation.
Be gentle with yourself and let yourself feel and experience it.
It will help you deal with the routine (or even daily) setbacks that life will give you.
Respond to your setbacks by demonstrating what you value most.
