You won’t succeed on Medium without the 80/20 “rule”!
How many times have we heard the subject of Engagement mentioned, discussed, encouraged, harangued, argued, shoved aside, and brought forward? Yea, lots! Do you understand why yet? For those that have a firm grasp, you are excused — go get some coffee. For those that don’t get it, hang around for a short tutorial.
We all presumably like to write or we wouldn’t be here. It snatches me out of bed in the morning (or is that Finn?). I’m fired up to crank the writing box up and see what happened while I was comatose. This morning I saw over 60 comments, my biggest day yet. And that is on top of another 40–50 during the day. For those that may be saying at this time, that number is a walk in the park, fine. We all have to start somewhere, right? Do you not remember your own baby steps?
Now, if you think those responses, which are always a mix of claps, highlights, comments all emanate from views or reads of my articles, you would be slightly off the mark.
Most are a result of Engagement. The fine art of reading a lot of writes and responding with more than claps. Another ‘story’ as Medium calls it. That surprised me in the beginning until I learned and now understand the system we live with. It’s a pretty cool feature once you embrace it.
So, when I break down my day spent in this wonderful little community, I tally on average 80% percent spent on Engagement and the remaining 20% on writing my own stuff.
Now, before you jump up and say, no way or offer some other retort, whoa, Nelly!
Your breakdown of time may be way different than mine. That’s ok, to repeat the now overly tired saying, “it is what it is!”
We all have other things asking for our time in addition to being a writer. I well know. At the end of your own analysis of this, if you choose to do so, maybe you are looking at a 75/25 or a 60/40, whatever the split, it’s yours.
Bottom line, fellow writer’s, if you want to grow your own business on Medium, Engagement with followers and fellow writers will produce the fastest growth. More time spent reading, commenting and responding to the work of others will reward you more initially than your own articles.
The caveat to the above is if you are fortunate enough to write exciting, jump off the page writes right out of the gate. Fantastic! I am truly excited for you. You have discovered the magic elixir. For those that aren’t as fortunate, we have to put in the work, it’s only one word, Engagement.
Thanks for reading. I always appreciate you stopping by.
