Summary

The article discusses the incredibly low odds of an individual's existence, emphasizing the remarkable nature of being alive.

Abstract

The article "You Won’t Believe the Odds" delves into the staggering probabilities against any one person being born, drawing from a study that calculates these odds to be 1 in 10^2,685,000. It reflects on the series of unlikely events that had to occur for our existence, from our parents' meeting to the conception process, and extends back through generations, suggesting a probability of 1 in 10^2,640,000 for our lineage to survive. The author uses these calculations to counter feelings of insignificance, instead framing life as a precious and miraculous occurrence, far surpassing the number of atoms in the universe. The piece concludes by encouraging gratitude for life and acknowledging the support received from individuals like Rochelle Silva.

We are so lucky to be alive

What is the probability? Of us being alive in this vast infinity? Well, I crunched some numbers and read one study, Oh girl, oh boy, we are unbelievably lucky!

What are the odds that your parents would meet? 1 in 20, 000, What are the chances that they would conceive between the sheets? 1 in 2,000

In addition,

Each one of us was once two, a tadpole and an egg, The egg was 1 in 100,000 that made its way to the oven, The tadpole was 1 in 4 trillion that arrived through some loving, That is 1 in 400, 000, 000, 000, 000.

Also,

We should count back to every generation, And factor in our lineage to this equation, Grand, greater, greatest father, and mother, Around 1 in 10²⁶⁴⁰⁰⁰⁰ the answer will hover.

Now,

Crunch the numbers and make it all fit, 1 in 10²⁶⁸⁵⁰⁰⁰ are the odds that we exist, The odds of that happening may seem impossible, But you reading these words proves it’s possible.

So,

Whenever you feel down, depressed, or unlucky, Remember your odds are greater than all the atoms of every galaxy, Formed from stars that once shone brighter than the sun, You have already beaten the odds, 10²⁶⁴⁰⁰⁰⁰ to one, Be thankful for your life and everything that you are, Because every breath you take is a miracle above par.

I came across an interesting article today about the chances of life existing and the numbers really boggled my mind. The odd of me being born is lower than the number of all the atoms in the entire universe! This information sent my mind on a nonstop rollercoaster ride — thinking about how insignificant I really was in the grand scheme of the universe. I was just a speck of dust floating in an infinite sea. But, then another thought found me afloat and told me to look at it another way.

How lucky was I to be born?

I was 1 out of 10²⁶⁴⁰⁰⁰⁰ and you are too!

We have been given a chance at life that should statistically be impossible. That is something special. That is a miracle. We are all miracles!
