The importance of habits
Even if a person had the best dream ever and met the most successful people on earth, they would not accomplish their dreams without an appropriate setting of their time and actions.
If life is a journey, our dreams are our destinations. The people, institutions, and books that have helped us along this journey represent our maps, compasses, road signs, forecast, etc.
However, our habits are our daily paths. The way we nurture our bodies and souls is the energy that keeps us strong.
A dream is a fictional story that we tell ourselves repetitively. The story-related patterns and words that we continuously read and hear (in books, in discourses, etc.) are the rhythm and tones that help our story become much more compelling to people that share our dream.
But the problem is that the dream of reaching a target is nothing without an appropriate system and a tenacious determination to reach that destination.
Besides, nobody can walk and think if they do not feed their body and mind appropriately, or if their dream is not materialistically reachable.
How to reach my dream
The people that can easily find efficient means of transport during their journey seem fortunate. Those that live very close to their destination are even luckier. Some others, at least, have access to appropriate tools to help them see the journey and foresee the weather.
But even with all those elements, some people do not reach their destination, whether because they are not strong enough or do not take the required steps.
Nevertheless, even if your dream is not that clear, which often happens, if you are sufficiently strong, you can venture into life with no fear and find your purpose along that journey.
You might think you were born with no opportunities because you lived far away from your destination or did not have any network to mentor you through your journey.
However, you will find people to help you if you demonstrate that you have enough confidence in your dream and are consistent enough in doing so.
When you want to accomplish something, you must transform it into a piece of yourself.
One of the easiest ways to make any activity part of your identity is by implementing it in your habit systems.
Here are some tools that can help you understand how to add any activity to your habit systems and what to avoid if you want to maintain some habits.
How Habits Work
Let’s take a few examples, so we can illustrate the ways human beings create and break habits.
First scenario
I have had a strict morning routine this year: I wake up every weekday at 7:00 am and at 9:00 am every weekend.
I am glad this habit has become a part of me since the second month, although I struggled a lot during the first month.
However, I have broken this habit a few times because of those three main events:
1) I slept too late the day before
2) I woke up too early the day before
3) I did not drink and eat properly one or several days before
What is the logical conclusion:
Each habit is an element of a more complex habit system where each component is connected to the others directly or indirectly. When we break one habit, we will likely break another.
Applying the habit that followed the one we broke can even seem pointless sometimes because working on a single behavior without considering its entire system is often a waste of time and energy.
For example, if you want to publish well-written pieces consistently, you must always look for new tools to help you write better.
If you want to exercise every morning before going to work, you must also get up earlier.
Second scenario
If you read my first stories, you may remember that I had a complicated relationship with chocolate.
I worked hard and almost broke this habit — at least, that is what I assumed.
This Christmas weekend, however, was my low point: Many people gave me chocolate, which I took home with me.
At first, I thought I would eat them in moderation; however, I ate them as if they were any other type of food until I got a bellyache.
What is the logical conclusion:
Every habit is associated with a context (a place, a time, or a set of patterns).
In my case, my house was where I used to eat a lot of chocolate when I was addicted to it.
As a result, whenever I bring chocolate into my house, I find myself tempted to consume it.
If a person always smokes in nightclubs. When they go to that place, they will feel like smoking. If they want to break the cycle, they ought to stop going to nightclubs or develop a less harmful alternative that they can use whenever they are in that location.
Third scenario
Despite not having a specific writing schedule, I write almost every day. I am relatively consistent; however, that does not mean I always publish excellent content. I do not write well when I am exhausted and weak from other activities. Besides, there are times when I do not post anything for several days.
What is the logical conclusion:
Every habit or lifestyle requires a certain kind of energy. We cannot perform any habit efficiently unless we prepare our body or mind appropriately.
For example, if you want to exercise consistently, you should eat properly and get enough rest daily.
You must take care of your mental health so that you are not a burden to others if you want to keep and make more quality friendships.
What About Your 2023 Resolutions
To achieve your 2023 goals, you must define them clearly and outline the main steps.
That is why it is also your responsibility to educate yourself about them.
For example, to be healthier, you should first understand what it means to be healthy and then figure out how to get there.
When you have sufficient information from credible sources, you must apply the ideas and tips discovered to your case.
Besides, you should develop complementary routines linked to the main habits of that goal.
For example, buying protein every two weeks can be a correlated habit with eating properly. Because a person who does not have healthy food in their house will be inclined to develop bad eating habits.
Furthermore, by describing your habits in terms of context, they will become much easier to maintain.
If you want to exercise every two days, you must determine where, when, with whom, etc. A sentence like “I will exercise by myself every two mornings from 6:00 to 7:00 am at the gym next to my house” is quite suitable.
Finally, a habit can only be effective and well-established if the person who is performing it is adequately prepared or equipped.
If you want to drink a type of protein each morning, can you afford to buy it? Is there any other protein food or beverage that is less expensive? Are you able to afford to go to the gym? Would it be more convenient for you to go for a run? Are you physically fit enough to exercise?
That is, no matter what your 2023 resolutions are, you need to be specific by questioning yourself, so you do not get lost. But most importantly, you need to establish a set of behaviors that will become your system. And remember that your case is unique to you. Therefore, you must create your contexts and find your sources of energy.
