The poem "I Knew the Day Would Come" by Adelia Ritchie, published in 2021, delves into the essence of a profound love story. It portrays the bond between two people who consider themselves to be soulmates, detailing the natural harmony and synchronicity of their relationship. The poem uses metaphors such as lock and key, and complementary food pairings to illustrate their perfect fit. The narrative conveys an intimate connection that transcends physical distance, with the speaker feeling the partner's presence and affection even when apart. The poem also touches on the sensory experiences that remind the speaker of their loved one, evoking imagery of nature and the comforting familiarity of their partner's voice. A love story

I knew the day would come when you fully realized that we are soulmates

The way we talk together walk together fit together

We are lock and key butter and popcorn potatoes and gravy scotch and rocks

You possess me heart soul mind There is no space between us

Yet when we’re apart I feel the touch of your reaching heart Your thoughts caress

You come to me in morning mist warm and moist soft and sweet on my skin

I smell you in the wind Earthy, of pine and spruce of lichens in the understory of icy mountain springs

I hear your baritone notes tickling my ears like butterflies stopping for nectar

But you’re not wild not free as the breeze tethered to a mistake we made a decade ago

You will always be my hero always in my dreams alive in my memories

until you’re free to be with me.
