You Will Always Be My #3

The spouse before kids narrative is not for me

To my husband:

You will always be my #3. Not my #1 or my #2. I love you because I know that I will also always be your #3.

See, our boys deserve your world. They are more important than me. They are more important than you. They are everything.

They deserve our separate attention before anyone else. We brought them into the world, ready to let them turn everything upside down.

Don’t get me wrong, husband. When I get a weekend with just you-it’s magical. When I’m able to remember 21 again and those first days. Those first dates. It’s perfect. We laugh together and sit on the roof of our Airbnb and skinny dip. We eat cake for breakfast, watch the sunrise, and remember what life was like when it was quiet. It’s just us two again, for a few moments.

But life now- life now can’t compare. Life now can’t compete with 21 and quiet. Life now is fulfilled and good and meaningful. Life now is big hugs and being more proud than I ever thought possible. Life now is loud and busy and full of emotions and growing up.

These boys are everything good. They are the best parts of you and the best parts of me. They are also the hardest parts of you and the hardest parts of me. The parts we don't fully understand yet.

These boys are my #1. The people I would die for. The people I live every day for. The people that molded me into who I am today. My reason and my soul.

But you, husband- you are my best friend. You are my partner and my support. You are sometimes my punching bag, and I’m sorry for that.

You are so important. You gave me these little people, and that is the very best.

I will always make our dates and our weekend trips a priority. I will do it for us, for our foundation. I will make sure you always know why you are my #3.

And we will make sure they always know why they are #1.
