You Should Love Your Career, but You Aren’t Supposed to Always Like It

Your relationship with work is like any relationship, imperfect.

No matter what you do, and how much you love it, there are always going to be parts of it that you hate, or at least you don’t like.

Just like in a relationship with another human. Your values and goals should be aligned, but not every part of the relationship can be perfect.

There will be days when you will doubt everything you do. There will be days you will get angry, disappointed, and frustrated.

And sometimes, you will think this is just too hard and complicated to figure out. You will feel tired, beaten down and ready to give up.

You might think that you are not good enough for this career in some moments. And in other moments you will think that your career is not good enough for you.

And that’s okay. Actually, that is great. Means that you are doing something worth doing and has some real value to you and to the world.

We are supposed to go through those days, because making valuable things is hard. And we need to get stronger and more resilient in order to become the person who can do the hard things.

When those days come, take a deep breath, and ask yourself:

Do I still believe that my work matters, and what I am doing is valuable to the world?

If the answer is no too many days in a row, it’s time to think about another career. Because when you are not aligned in values with your career, it is very painful to endure the hard days.

Think of three things you are passionate about, and there you’re going to find your new path.

And if you cannot figure it out, take a day off and spend it on your own. Just wake up naturally and then see what you will do that day, when there is no one and no plan to force you. I promise you, you will find in that day the things you are genuinely passionate about.

But if the answer is yes to the question, think of three small good things that happened that day and forget about the rest. Don’t let a bad day that you don’t like, make you give up on a career that you love! Tomorrow is going to be a new day, and you will try again.
