You Now Need $4 Million To Retire In America: From The Land Of Opportunities To Miserable Survival.

I moved to America to achieve my dreams which turned into a nightmare…

I always had big ambitions and was eager to climb the professional ladder. So, in 2001 I took advantage of America’s Free Land full of opportunities.

When I arrived at JFK airport in 2002 with only my backpack and $100, I vowed to work tirelessly towards my ambitious goals.

I always believed that anything is possible in America if you’re determined and willing to work hard. I started at the bottom, working odd jobs like cleaning, nannying, nursing, managing, and consulting at the Department of Defense.

Yes, I can say I made it.

But did I really?

I spent over sixteen years of my life in the United States, and the only things I can remember are working, going to school, running errands, and sleeping. Of course, shopping is a national hobby but I wasn’t particularly interested in it.

The American lifestyle seemed to lack fun or enjoyment, consisting only of work and chores.

Even though I was earning a comfortable salary in America, it didn’t cover the bare essentials.

My social life suffered as a result and American people, in general, weren’t interested in social life.

It was all about money.

In the past, people struggled to find both time and money for their hobbies. Now, retiring on 4 million dollars is becoming increasingly difficult in the US.

And don’t even think about buying a property outright — that’s way too expensive!

Earning today in America is like a treadmill. It gets harder and harder to stay in one place, let alone move forward.

The only way to keep up is to run faster and faster, just to stay in the same spot.

This is especially true when it comes to finances. It’s not enough to simply make ends meet — we have to keep moving forwards, too. We have to earn more money, save more money, and invest more money if we want to improve our financial situation.

I had years into a career for the government, with multiple degrees and it is paycheck to paycheck for sure.

We couldn’t seem to get ahead no matter how much we achieved; it felt like every time we advanced in our career or reached a financial goal, things became even more economically difficult.

One of my friends whose husband is CEO of the gas company told me recently, I had the wrong mindset in America. I could have a creative career and attract like-minded people.

She never worked in her life. I rest my case.

I really can’t stand people who believe that single moms and service workers can just switch their mindsets and become suddenly rich in the exploitative capitalist system.

If you believe then please let me know. I am all ears.

My husband and I are nurses who used to work two or three jobs just to make ends meet. We studied hard and made sacrifices, leaving our home countries for the false promises of America being the land of opportunity.

I recently heard a podcast discussing how many of LA’s homeless population are employed, but still can’t afford rent. In Colorado, the governor is trying to help by giving them access to showers and overnight parking in designated areas.

According to a new study, millennials will need $4 million to retire comfortably in the US.

I wasn’t the only one- life in the US is really tough and it makes everyone unhappy and angry.

The new American trend is from the land of opportunities to miserable survival. There is no hope for the future generation.

No matter how hard I worked, there was never enough money to go around- and that’s why I eventually decided to move back home.

It was sad and frustrating how much more money I needed to make than my parents did to achieve a fraction of their life quality. It’s not fair, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for hardworking people like us to keep up with this rat race.

I’m not grateful to the US for all its opportunities because they were soul-sucking.

Many people in America don’t realize that there are other options out there. It’s not just about working hard and achieving never-coming success; it’s about finding a balance between work and life and being able to enjoy both. In many countries, less than $100k is sufficient to retire.

Many Americans still believe, everyone wants to move in there. But only immigrants from very poor countries move there, I don’t know any Europeans.

That’s why my husband and I left America for Spain. We found a place where we can enjoy peace, nature, and quality of life. It was our way to reclaim our lives back from this rat race.

Perhaps it is time for all of us to find a better path in life than just running on the same old treadmill. Life is too short to be stuck in an endless race of working to survive, and it’s time we break free and make our dreams come true.

It’s time for us to start looking outside the box and considering other options so that we can create a better future. The future is not only about money, work, and hustle. There is so much more to life.
