You Learn As You Grow

And you grow as you learn some more.

My friend Noor texted me, saying that he felt as if my recent story, One size doesn’t fit all, left him feeling like there should have been more. He was somewhat disappointed that it was short when it could have been longer.

I explained to him that I am keeping my daily stories short because I want to get into the habit of posting something every day, for two reasons.

First, I know that consistency is the key to success in any endeavor, and more specifically, here on Medium. A consist output will help me build a strong following, and hopefully get Medium’s attention, resulting in a broader distribution of my stories through curation.

Everything I have read about success as a writer on Medium mentions curation as a significant and most crucial part of the strategy. Of course, quality is a pre-requisite, but quantity is imperative, as well. Also, when you build a following that claps and highlights, it helps with curations as well, from what I have read.

Second, by posting regularly, I’ll receive feedback in the form of stats, highlights, and comments. When people highlight something, it gives me a clue as to what they like, and I can use that information to write a new story or expand on the idea.

Comments like his allow me to create new content by expanding on the idea in the original story. I am already pondering developing some new material based on the original.

It is true that you grow by doing and learning, but you also learn by expanding your knowledge and understanding. When you grow, you’re not only able to see more, but from different perspectives as well.

Practice makes perfect, they say. However, it is the intentional practice that makes you grow. Merely repeating an act keeps you repeating the mistakes too. Practicing with the intention of learning and growing allows you to see your mistakes and correct them.

Before you go…

You can let others tell you what it means to be successful, or you can decide it for yourself.”
