You Gave Me The Confidence I Needed

Prompt #1 “A Thank You Note to a Teacher”

Photo by Icons8 Team on Unsplash

The lovely Trista Signe Ainsworth invited writers to write a note to a teacher that touched our hearts and submit it to her new publication, Thank You Notes.

For many, their first thoughts might go to the high school teacher that made a difference in their lives.

High school wasn’t a great time for me.

I was good at school, but not so good with relationships, and it didn’t help that I dropped out in Grade 10.

There were moments where a teacher tried but was unable to get through to me.

In my late twenties, after several years of struggling, I made my way back to school.

This time it was our local community college.

I’d injured myself working at the local butcher store and the Workers Compensation support program decided in their wisdom to retrain me in another career.

I had the choice of welding or bookkeeping, so bookkeeping it was.

Most of the courses were office skills. Typing, filing, and writing business letters. I found it boring, but stuck with it, hoping it would help me get a better job in the future.

The other students were adult learners, so the class was full of people who were there to learn, which was different than high school.

I remember realizing high school was less important than my parents had made it out to be.

This was where I could learn practical skills that would translate into a better job, and that was fine with me.

I remember one teacher who took an interest in his students. He taught the basic bookkeeping classes and managed to make dry lessons about economics relate to the real world.

You could tell he knew his audience, and he was good at making connections with students.

Near the end of the semester, he encouraged me to enroll in the CGA program, a degree program for Accountants. He even offered to be my sponsor when I applied.

That made all the difference in my life.

I went on to get my degree and then worked my way to a senior financial management position at a large college. That gave me the independence and financial freedom to choose how I wanted to live my life.

I don’t recall his name, but I’d like to thank him here.

Dear Teach (you know who you are),

I’m writing this letter to tell you how much I appreciate you.

You came into my life at a moment when I needed to make a shift. I wasn’t headed in a great direction and you helped me see that.

I really appreciate your encouragement and support in applying to join the accounting degree program.

Without your sponsorship, it’s unlikely I would have continued in that direction and I wanted to let you know how much it meant to me.

Yours truly

Tree
