You Forgot You Are Beautiful
It’s time to remember
You were born full of wonder and delight. You were born perfectly imperfect. You were born whole. You were born complete.
You were born beautiful.
As you grew, this never changed. What you were born as, you still are.
What happened was you forgot. The world told you things and showed you things that made you forget.
The world told you lies, and you believed those lies. You built the foundation of your life upon those lies. You became those lies.
You forgot you are beautiful.
The world took its own shame and threw it onto to you. Instead of letting the shame go because you knew it wasn’t yours, you kept it. You held onto it. You carried the shame everywhere you went. You built the foundation of your life upon the shame that wasn’t yours. You became the shame that was never yours to become.
You forgot you are beautiful.
When the world told you that you were not enough, you believed it. When the world told you that you needed to constantly be doing and achieving to prove your worth, you believed it. When the world told you that you needed to be perfect to be loved, you believed it.
You forgot you are beautiful.
The world told you that you needed to look outside yourself to be happy. The world told you the new job and the next promotion would make you happy. The world told you the next relationship would make you happy. The world told you flawless skin and the perfect body would make you happy. The world told you the next big purchase would make you happy.
You believed it all. Maybe you achieved and obtained it all. But you’re still not happy. You keep looking for the next thing to make you happy. You keep wanting what other people have that you don’t because you think those things will make you happy.
You forgot you are beautiful.
You can’t be still. When you’re still, you feel things you don’t want to feel. You might not even be aware of the uncomfortable emotions building up inside of you, because as soon as they begin to bubble up, you will do anything to make the feelings stop. So, you can’t be still.
Instead, you are constantly doing or working or going after things. You are buying things you don’t need. You are searching for the next date or relationship. You are numbing yourself. You are finding things to be addicted to. You are scrolling or drinking or eating or binge watching.
You will do anything if it means you don’t have to feel the things you don’t want to feel.
You forgot you are beautiful.
You hide behind a mask. You don’t want anyone to see the real you. You don’t want to show true vulnerability lest someone think you are weak or there is something wrong with you.
You try to be who other people want you to be. You want everyone to like you. You want everyone to approve of you. You attempt to fit into the box of others’ expectations.
You forgot you are beautiful.
You try to control other people and situations. You can’t let go. You can’t allow things to be the way you don’t want them to be. You need life to be a certain way and people to act a certain way for you to feel safe and loved.
You are consumed by anxiety. You fear other people’s anger. You don’t want anyone to be displeased with you. You sacrifice your needs for the sake of others. You allow other people to treat you poorly.
You forgot you are beautiful.
As you grew up you made mistakes. You were not perfect. You didn’t achieve everything you wanted to achieve or become everything you wanted to become.
But as you made mistakes and lived an imperfect life, you didn’t become shameful or worthless or not good enough. All those things the world told you were lies.
You need to take responsibility for and learn from your mistakes. But making mistakes is part of being human.
You are as human now as you were when you were born. Your soul is full of wonder and delight. You are perfectly imperfect. You are whole. You are complete.
You are beautiful.
There is nothing wrong with you. The only thing wrong is that you have forgotten who you are and who you have always been.
It’s time to remember.
