You don’t need self-improvement
You need self-acceptance

Nowadays it seems like a common belief that self-improvement is a great thing for everyone. It isn’t. I don’t say that becoming a better person is not a desirable thing, rather than we started to only focus on that. The collective ideals brought by the hustle culture, are built around that. You should always improve, there is something that it is always lacking within you and your current self will never be sufficient. Your current life condition is not enough.
A sure way to suffer
If you only think about you what is lacking about yourself, you will never be satisfied with what you have. Some think that this is a great idea as it promotes growth in a person. That is true but, there needs to be a fine balance between acceptance and a desire to grow. Too much of either of these two could create problems in the long run.
Even though that might seem like common knowledge is not what is promoted online. You can see in all directions, books, movies and content creators all promote products that are supposed to help you level up your productivity level.
People are taught that they should not sleep, eat and only work. For as many days as possible, until they die. This is the spell that people are put under.
The idea of a deep emptiness starts to overwhelm people that believe such things, an emptiness that is never satisfied with what you achieve.
You will find yourself running, chasing something that will always slip through your fingers.
That chase will never stop.
Accepting yourself
The chase towards something can be endless. Making the present obsolete and only a construction scene for the future.
I think the present is to be enjoyed and to do that, you need to accept your current condition.
There are various ways, that are already popular with regards to achieving self-acceptance.
- One of them is meditation, the practice of solely focusing on one thing, your breathing or something else for a certain number of minutes
- Another useful practice is journaling. Through journaling, you can investigate certain problems that you have and possible resolutions. It will clarify certain aspects about yourself and you might gain clarity towards who you are.
- One last thing that I think would be useful is being grateful. This can be done as an exercise every morning, and it could cast light on the positive aspects of your life.
Regardless of whether you engage in any of this practice, accepting and loving yourself is a necessary thing, to enjoy the present moment.
Tomorrow is not to be taken for granted, the future is always uncertain as it can bring blissful happiness or ravaging catastrophes.
I don’t think people should give up trying to become something else and improve. However, I don’t think it’s wise to be your sole purpose in life.
Accepting and falling in love with yourself will make the process of becoming something else, a much more enjoyable experience.
