You Don’t Have to Wait a Few Days Before Editing — Here’s a Better Technique
All you have to do is change your view.
Sometimes I feel like I’m in a different universe with my writing process.
There are so many golden rules that I break, you’d be surprised I somehow cobble up a blog post with it. I don’t use outlines, I come up with my ideas almost an hour before I write about them, and oh yeah…
I barely edit my articles.
We all know how editing is supposed to work. You write your article, wait a couple of days, then do your first scan through. Then you wait even more days to scan through it again. The whole process is a giant slug.
No one has time for that.
Here’s a simpler way for you to edit your articles without waiting days before publishing:
Edit on your phone.
The main reason why other writers say that you should wait a few days before editing is because your eyes need to be…cleaned I guess. You need to simmer on a post a while and let it marinate before you edit. I think Tim Denning once said that there are two different mindsets required for both, which is why he writes and edits on different days.
I definitely agree that your eyes need a break from seeing the article, but I think editing on your phone produces that same effect. Here’s why:
- If most of your writing is done on your computer, seeing it in on a smaller screen makes it feel like you’re reading a different article.
- Looking at your article on your phone aids in getting your reader’s perspective (since they most likely will read it off their phone) which is the whole point of editing.
- Most people are probably used to typing on their phone so it gives a sense of familiarity and you can pull it out way easier and faster. You can edit in small spurts on the go if you want to.
There are probably more benefits to editing on your phone, but I’ll leave it at that.
My editing process has improved a lot because I notice more mistakes on my phone than on my computer.
You don’t have to wait a million days to edit.
You can edit right away by looking at your article on your phone. This has improved my editing process tremendously because it gives my eyes a different screen to look at. Plus, it’s a great way to get into your reader’s heads since that is how most of them will view it.
So what are you waiting for?
Pull out your phone and start editing.
