You Can’t Go Forward When A Part Of You Is Stuck In The Past
Living in the present moment

Life is a constant flow that’s ever going forward. However, amidst the ebb and flow of life, one thing threatens to disrupt your current blissful state. The hardest thing to deal with is stuck in the past.
You pursue your dreams, anchor your hopes, build castles in the sky, yet you can’t help but peek over your shoulder now and then to catch a glimpse of what used to be the times when your most significant moments are kept alive.
You held on to the days when there was a version of you who were fitter, stronger, and happier. You loved immensely and life showers you with abundance. You were happy with life. You were amazing back then. Without a doubt, you had it all together, and the world spins on your finger. Life was pure bliss in its simplicity. That’s why you can’t help but keep one foot in the past while reluctantly being dragged into the future.
You convinced yourself that the past was as good as it gets and that the good old days are far behind you.
It’s hard to move on when deep down, you still believe the past exists, being so vividly alive in the realms of your memory. Just like getting caught in the ocean, the current will pull you under, and then wash you upon its shores. You’re dimly aware that the sense of time you had experienced is illusory.
What if the past doesn’t exist?
Your distorted perception of time and false comparison rob you of the present. Things were happening in your mind but the clock was not going ahead; the flow of time was not passing.
What if the past doesn’t exist? What if it doesn’t possess the power to keep you trapped and cause you to relive the dreams again and again?
What if you can finally be fully present in the moment?
The thought of letting go feels irresponsible, or maybe you just plain refuse to. Holding on doesn’t make things any easier. Remember that you need to make progress and move forward. It’s necessary for you to re-evaluate your sense of time. You may not forget but be willing to accept that it’s no longer a piece of reality.
It was, it’s now gone, and it no longer is.
You have to stop rehashing the past, break the chains that bind you, and live in the reality of this time. The past is no longer deemed as real, therefore you can possibly erase and collapse it from your consciousness. At some point, you’ve got to let the fire die out.
You can’t go back
You can’t be fully present if a part of you is stuck somewhere in the past. It’s always about ‘the good old times’, or ‘back in those days’, and even ‘such-and-such wasn’t around back then.’
You can’t go back. You are here right now and you need to deal with it.
If the past doesn’t exist anymore, then all your memories are nothing but stories. If they are just stories, then they can be re-written. And if it can be re-written, you can choose how each story turns out. Edit out all the negative aspects and rewrite your story until it supports your current ability to live a balanced, purposeful, and happy life.
Assess your life and figure out what’s making you unhappy now as compared to the past, and change that. Highlight your achievements, cultivate gratitude, and see yourself growing and evolving into a better version from where you used to be.
A passing scene in an unreal, shadowy world
It doesn’t mean you’re ignoring the imperfections, and there’s no denying that there’re still a lot of improvements needed. But when you look at life as a whole from the current perspective, gratitude enables you to identify some amount of goodness that you might not have noticed before.
You have the power to revise and edit your story often. After all, it’s only in your head. As you begin to own your story, it will gradually become integrated with your sense of self and you’ll find harmony with the past, present, and future version of you.
What happens if you decide not to go backward, but forward? What happens if you’re willing to uproot the old familiar so you can have something better? What if everything you ever believed about the past was a lie, that it wasn’t the good old days, instead just a passing scene in an unreal, shadowy world?
And perhaps, if you muster enough courage to bid goodbye to the past and rise into the present, to fully live that it will change your entire life.
Today would soon become the past and the future would soon become today. Stop the foolishness of looking back and start paying attention to where you are now.
