You Can’t Donate To All Of The Candidates

Everyone running for office needs money

If you have ever donated to any political campaign, you are probably now being inundated with daily emails asking for donations to the campaigns of candidates for Senate or House of Representative seats throughout the country. Sometimes they ask for $1, $5, or $25. The ask may not be that large for each individual candidate, but there are a lot of them running in close races. You might want to donate to help them out. The asks are not generally that large for Democrats. It is quite likely that Republicans ask for bigger amounts.

Political campaigns cost huge amounts of money. Even small campaigns for local school boards and city councils can cost thousands of dollars. The Congressional offices and certain state offices generally cost into many millions of dollars. It is mind boggling how much money is spent by people trying to be elected.

Some people campaiging (such as the Trump family) can go into certain states and quickly raise four or five million dollars. They are able to solicit funds from the rich Republicans who support Trump in the various states. That seems like an easier way to raise money from wealthy donors who can give more in a lump sum. The other smaller amounts do add up, however.

There are campaign donor rules which people must follow, and reports need to be made at certain periods during the campaign to show that the donations are above board. Wealthy suuporters on both sides are able to form PACs (political action committees) which are a way to throw in more money to a candidate.

Although there are over 7,000 registered PACs, some of them are scams which are cheating people of their money. The people running them are sometimes dishonest and are using the money for their own personal gain. That is against the law as most of the money collected by PACs is mandated to go for political reasons.

You may not be able to donate to every candidate who asks you for money, but they all need funds to get elected. Helping them out by donating is a way to show support for the candidates of your choice.
