You Can’t Demand a Genuine Apology From Someone Who Isn’t Really Sorry
A forced apology is a complete waste of everyone’s time

Whenever somebody famous does something bad, people demand an apology from them.
But the problem is, you can’t demand a genuine apology from someone. For it to mean anything, it has to be a true expression of regret. If you have to demand it, it is not genuine.
All it means is they are able to fake whatever behaviour others want to see. It’s all about rescuing their public reputation.
Will Smith laughed at Chris Rock’s joke. Then he slapped Chris. Not because he was offended by the joke. It was to “look like a man” in front of his wife.
He later offered a public apology on Instagram. Was he genuinely sorry? I don’t know. But I do know that it’s not enough.
Actions speak louder than words. An apology on Instagram is not enough for assaulting someone on stage in front of the whole world.
So, what would be the appropriate action to make amends? Livestream punching himself in the face? Let Chris Rock run on stage and kick him in the balls?
No, not really, because two wrongs don’t make a right.
A better option would be some type of grand gesture of kindness. Like at the next awards ceremony that Chris presents, he gives him a hug and tells him what an amazing guy he is. In front of the whole world.
But maybe that still wouldn’t make up for the public humiliation. It needs to be something bigger, like taking him away on vacation or buying him a house.
But my point is that none of this can be demanded from Will. Because then we’re like directors shouting “And….ACTION!”
Because demanding an apology from someone is like demanding they say they love you. Okay, you can demand it. But if they do say it, it doesn’t mean they mean it. It just means they are willing to say anything to get you to shut up.
