You Can Write From Your Heart
How to create a writing ritual to write your best

“The human soul can always use a new tradition. Sometimes we require them.” ― Pat Conroy
If writing is at the core of who you are, you possess a heart ready to share. I believe all of us who create for a living have rituals that help us start each day anew.
I love traditions. I also love changing them.
Some of my habits have stayed the same through the years, and others have shifted. Some rituals remain to help my heart create each day.
I want to share with you three rituals that help me reach deep into my spirit to write.
Breakfast
I love breakfast with all of my heart. It is my favorite meal of the day, and it gives me positive energy to start my day.
There are theories now about fasting or about which meal is most important. I believe that for each person, it is different.
Listen to your body, and you will know what is right for you. You will feel the energy from nourishing food when you need it.
For me, breakfast is my guiding light.
Breakfast sets the stage for my writing journey, giving me the fuel to walk the path of my spirit, spreading light wherever I go.
I usually eat a small bowl of fruit with homemade yogurt, a piece of sprouted whole-grain toast with butter and natural peanut butter, water, and French press coffee with milk.
As I sit down to write, I have a second cup of coffee in my eternal optimist mug.

Offering
We have a laughing Buddha statue on our coffee table. He came as a gift from my father-in-law when he was in the Philippines.
He smiles at us every day, all day.
Each morning, I offer him a piece of fruit, chocolate, or a snack. Then, I light a candle and ask for guidance.
Under the tray that holds the fruit, I keep notes about my goals. This keeps my heart light and ready to write because I know everything is taken care of.
I love this ritual because it helps me stay centered all day.

Heart Center
Before I begin to write, I connect with my inner being, living in my heart. I feel that writing from this place allows me to reach out to others.
I take a moment before I begin and place my hand on my heart.
I can feel the light emanating from within, and from this place, I can create. It helps me remain focused and aware of how I can reach out to my audience.
When you write from your heart, people can tell. It is like a warm hug leaping out from the screen.
I often feel tears of joy welling up when I read a fellow writer’s work because I know it came from their heart center.
