You Can Write a Book Too

I’m proof that it’s possible.

Writing a book seems like a daunting task. But only to the people who have never done it.

It’s a bridge you have to cross if you really want to write a book, and when you do, your life will change for the better.

Last Monday, my week started like any other normal week in college. Now, I finished the week with a published book under my belt.

The week took a turn for the better, and it’s been a roller coaster ride ever since.

I discovered how to write a book on Amazon through Kindle Direct Publishing. I followed its guidelines, took a collection of short stories I had already completed, and boom — my book was published.

I didn’t think it would happen so early in life at the mere age of 21, but it did. And it can happen for you too.

Find Your Idea

Since my first book was a collection of already completed short stories, I went ahead with it. Nevertheless, it won’t always be like this.

What are your ideas for a book? What’s your niche? What do you like to write?

When you figure this out, pick one idea and go for it. Once it’s in your mind and your passionate about the subject, the process will be so much better.

The Writing Process

You have to write every day. Seriously.

I know you hear this rule a thousand times a day, but it’s true. Why else would everyone say it?

Make a word count for yourself each day and execute it. Show up every day and don’t stop until the work is done.

This is how the work gets done, by you staying consistent and working hard toward completing your book. When you do, you will feel so much better when you complete it.

Publishing a Book

Kindle Direct Publishing was pretty difficult at first, but once you follow all of the guidelines, it’s a walk in the park.

If this is the route you choose to self-publish your book, great! There’s nothing wrong with it. I’m living proof that you can be published through Amazon.

Just like the writing, it takes hard work, consistence and dedication, but once you publish your book, that’s when the real magic happens.

Promoting Your Book

When you publish a book, you need to promote the heck out of it. There’s no other way around it.

I posted my book “Life: A Collection of Short Stories” on all of my social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. Tell all of your friends and anyone you know about the book.

Tell random people you have conversations with. For example, the other night at the bar, I ordered my drink and told the bartender I’m celebrating my first published book. He then said he would buy one. Try to ease your book into everyday conversations. You never know what will happen.

Lessons Learned From My First Book

  • It’s not about the money.
  • It’s about the passion.
  • It can be fun if you enjoy writing.
  • You have to seriously want to write your book.
  • It’s a great piece to add to your portfolio.

Closing Thoughts

Being a writer has always been a dream of mine. So has writing a book. Now, both dreams are a reality.

I wrote my first book at 21. Whether you’re 8 or 80, or somewhere in between, you can write a book too.

And when you do, let me know. I can’t wait to be one of your first readers.

Happy writing!
