Quick Tip

You Can Just Write

It’s not all about the holy grail of being curated.

Please don’t feel overwhelmed by all the advice you are bombarded with on how to be curated. Follow it, don’t follow it. You can choose the path that feels good to you.

I’ve been lucky enough to be curated three times. Two were outpourings from the heart. The stories flowed, the words raw and honest. My third involved a lot of research and learning from a wonderful course from Yale University. I used my own words and experiences to reflect what I’d learned, while also using the flow and content order from the course as a template.

That third article took me many hours to learn about the subject, research, and write. Then I had to edit my work, ensure the references to studies were cited correctly, and edit again.

I’m trying to write a piece today. I would love to follow the valuable advice and templates from my fellow senior editors. Instead, I’m not actually writing anything because I’m trying to find a template of an already curated article that I’d like to emulate the style and format of.

My stress levels are rising because I have twenty-eight drafts waiting to be finished and I’ve just started this one! I know when I’m rebelling against something, even when I know it’s in my best interest. In this case, I want to do it my way.

I don’t need to be curated every time I write something. It would be lovely if it happened, but seriously, not reality. What I do need to do is write. I am compelled to write about whatever has percolated to the top of my mind and get it down on paper and onto this amazing platform. Now.

Feel good about what you write, get your stories out there for the world to see. If someone loves it enough to curate it, subjectively, that’s fantastic. If you’re a technologist, scientist, inventor, it’s likely you write objectively. ILLUMINATION editors will look both objectively and subjectively at your work and curate the best.

Aiming for curation takes time if you are a new writer or have some knowledge and experience and you’re getting used to the way the platform and publications work.

I’m not letting a desire to be curated stop me from writing what I am compelled to write.

So here’s the kicker, I am giving myself permission to write, my way — trial and error, about what inspires me, motivates me, and on subjects that are close to my heart. You can give yourself permission to find joy in what you write.

For me, achieving the holy grail is nice when it happens. Otherwise, sharing my journey and learning as I go are the most important joyful elements of writing. I’d add that writing is also therapeutic and stress relieving.

Just write. Relax.
