You’re Not The Center Of The Universe
To achieve balance believe in something higher

There is nothing that wastes the body like worry, and one who has any faith in (something higher) should be ashamed to worry about anything whatsoever.
Mahatma Gandhi
If you want to truly have the power to achieve in your life, you have to be motivated by more than just yourself. You need to serve something higher, be it The Creator, Jesus, Nirvana, Muhammed, the Force or whatever you want to call it. Some people are content to serve family. Others feel a calling to benefit humanity, and some believe they are called to make a more global contribution. It’s all good, so long as you are serving more than just yourself.
Serving something bigger than yourself puts your life into perspective. It makes you feel connected to society and the world. It can also inspire you to keep creating and can inspire others. Sure, you do your job and that brings a financial reward. However you are not the center of the universe. Connecting outside your own existence allows you to begin to comprehend the force that you are as part of this immense world. You can understand the ways that you serve through your work, no matter what work you do. You are making a difference not just through direct contribution, but also the exponential benefits to those to whom your impact ripples .
It does not matter what your religious or spiritual beliefs are. What is important is that you are serving something bigger than yourself. This need to serve a higher purpose is part of our internal wiring. It will help you through the low points. Considering those dips as moments of profound learning or trials that will take you to your greater calling as you journey through life, will help you to have a deeper sense of purpose. This service to something beyond yourself will help you embrace the questions of your existence. Some of those include:
- Why are you here?
- What are you meant to experience?
- What are you meant to achieve?
- What is the lesson in this struggle?
- Based on your knowledge, strength and experience, how are you to make a difference?
When you believe in something higher, you begin to feel that you are not in this alone. That belief fuels a sense of meaning and purpose in your life. You will see struggles as purposeful, and victories as more significant than they might be otherwise. This belief will help you move beyond your own ego to a state of contribution. I often start my days by meditating on how I am supposed to contribute today. This keeps me balanced and focused on achieving progress one day at a time. I find that the more time I spend building a relationship with my higher source, the more focused I become on the contributions my works make.
As the quote from Gandhi above expresses, when you have faith you do not need worry. Everything that is put before you serves a purpose. Take some time to deeply consider what that purpose is. Through this discovery you will grow as a person and that growth will propel you towards accomplishment. It is an endless cycle of reflection and discovery. Similarly, not taking the time to fully digest your life dilemmas and decisions will have you repeating the lessons again and again until you get the answers right. Don’t try to avoid these; they serve as signposts for your life. If you are having problems with memories and thoughts you’d rather avoid, entertain these, meeting them head on. When you face your fears, disappointments, and even horrors you will begin to gain control over them. Step by step you can put them to use, serving you to achieve a higher purpose in your life. You are not alone, there is a higher power watching over you, no matter what you call it.
I think that anything that begins to give people a sense of their own worth and dignity is God.
John Shelby Spong
Be brave in facing your fears, tragedies and regrets. That is the only way to unbind yourself from their chains. Trust that you are not alone is facing these, your God is with you. Supporting you in your healing and holding you when the grief appears too great. Believe that there is a great force driving you towards extraordinary achievement. It’s not easy, but nothing worth achieving ever is.
Mary works in a supermarket. Everyday she meets the same kinds of people, most of whom treat her and her coworkers with disdain. Every night she comes home tired and irritable. Until one day, having had enough of the negativity, she decides to take a novel approach.
When she changes her mindset to considering that through her service, she herself is part of the team that helps these people feed their minds, bodies and families. She begins to smile at every customer. She takes an interest in their struggles and ends transactions with, “Thank you for choosing to shop in our store.” Or “Looks like you will enjoy a satisfying meal tonight.” She has not only changed her approach, but the shoppers’ mindset too. She has made a connection to serving the community and that in turn helps her to realize a contribution to society through her work. It has become more than just standing at a check stand scanning groceries and collecting money. Her work now has a transformational quality to it. She’s imparting a dash of goodness and spreading some positive energy. That positive energy will also make her customer’s ride home a bit more pleasant and their dinner taste a little better when they sit down to eat it.
This shift is possible for you too, if you want it. It starts with considering what you are contributing and how you serve. If you aren’t happy with your answers, start making some changes. Without a sense of contribution, a job is just something you are confined to in order to make money. A family is just a group of people that keep you from your own interest, and community service is something you do because you feel some external obligation to do so. With a sense of contribution, those things all take on a much deeper meaning. Believing that there is something beyond your physical world will help you feel that what you are working for is within your reach. It is achievable! If it weren’t, you would not be visualizing it. Have the courage to act on your visions and your exponential growth goals. By aiming for the stars, you will go far.
Think higher, think deeper. The people you serve, the positivity you spread, the ripples you start are all things within your control. Belief in something beyond yourself will provide that ability.
