You Are Just Afraid to Sell
And it has to stop
Last week, I was in Barcelona with my mentor. She’s a badass. We meet every month, and I’m always blown away by her insights. This time, she was sipping a martini on the rocks when she dropped this truth bomb.
You’re just afraid to sell.
Now. Let me give you a bit of context.
She had just told me about her new business idea
It’s a community-based course to become a badass at selling community-based courses. It will last for 30 days, and she plans on launching a new cohort every two months, with lots of hype building on Twitter and other social media in between.
Said like this, you think you’ve seen it before. Am I right? It smells like a borderline scammy Ponzi scheme of some sort. As if a multi-level marketer had been microdosing on shrooms a tad too much.
Well, I agree. That’s exactly what I said.
She smiled.
I repeated my arguments. “No, seriously, it sounds like you’ve been on one too many ayahuasca trips. This isn’t bringing value to people. This isn’t helping their development.”
She laughed.
“Look at you,” she answered. “Listen to all these wishy-washy explanations you’re serving me for not willing to take the first step to change your life. Do you want to sit in your cubicle for the next thirty years? Doing reporting in Powerpoint and presentations in Excel for people you hate? You want to earn close to nothing while they become billionaires thanks to your hard work?”
I didn’t want that. I told her so.
“So, why don’t you want to take advantage of people’s gullibility? What’s to stop you? That’s what your bosses have been doing. Take example for once.”
I was still shaking my head at that point. I have moral standards. There are things I don’t want to do. If only because I don’t want to give my kids such a bad example, even if it brings in six figures per year.
It was as if she was reading my mind.
“Don’t tell me about your moral standards. You’re a liberal. If people want to buy a course, they should be allowed to buy a course, right?”
She paused for effect and to take a sip of her vodka.
“You know I’m right. The only thing that’s stopping you is that you’re just afraid to sell.”
As always, when my mentor dropped a brutal truth, the time came to a halt. Her glass of rum froze mid-air, and I became intensely aware of our surroundings. The fake stucco on the ceiling started to glow as if inviting me for a quick burst of power-meditation.
Takeaway
Right away, I saw the truth in her words. And after one more minute of power-med, I knew what I had to do.
Now it’s your turn.
If you read that far, you’re the chosen one. You’re the mythical person that doesn’t want to be afraid to sell anymore, and that can get a VIP pass to my next community-based course on not being afraid to sell stuff people are ready to buy.
