You are in Control #7
Introducing listings and breaks
Good morning, everyone!
Welcome to a new week. A new list of life and work advice is out.
Before this, there are a few minor adjustments.
On constructive criticism
Last week, I stumbled upon two thoughtful comments.
One was by Edward Swafford. I will paraphrase what he said, where he argued that he felt that on Medium, there wasn’t enough true feedback.
He felt that he wanted a comment on how his work was in black and white.
I feel like there’s not enough true feedback on Medium, maybe that’s because it’s such a happy. smiley, friendly community. Sometimes I wish ppl commented “This isn’t your best work, if you did A, B, and C it would be” but nobody would write that as it’s so frowned upon to be critical on this platform... But someday, I just want a real comment telling me how it is.
The second was by Jennifer Marla Pike. She was frustrated by read-for-read communities that never help you improve or push you further.
That has got me thinking a lot about our community. At its heart, it is a distribution mechanism where we share articles from community members aligned with different themes.
If you need work-related advice, any reader or writer can learn many insights from different writers all in one place.
That’s what makes our community unique.
However, we would also like to take it a notch higher by introducing critical feedback to help us improve.
What this means is that we would encourage you to also offer critical feedback and let the writer know there is still more work needed.
As you offer critical feedback, please try to be human and kind in your criticism. Don’t be rude or insult the writer, but instead, mention where you do not align with their views.
I would love your thoughts on this as well. Would you love to have more critical comments about your articles from community members?
Also, note that critical comments are voluntary. Only offer criticism where you feel there is a need.
On control and taking a break
The second adjustment we introduced this week is listing.
What this means is that from list #8, the writers will be allowed to send the articles they would like listed in the next week. This will be via a form.
Listing is important because it eliminates the need to check which members are not cooperating and engaging with each other.
Similarly, we have also grown in size and have a lot of new members. As the community expands, it becomes challenging to scan their profiles to get stories to be added to the community.
The listing will also help you take a break if need be.
Most of the community members are part of many reading communities, such as Be Open. Engaging different writers daily can be quite taxing and overwhelming.
By listing your articles, you determine if you want to be part of the next list based on your schedule. Sometimes, you may have other obligations that would require some time off. In such a case, don’t list your articles in the form for this community.
The listing will be done on Friday and Saturday to prepare the list by Monday.
