The Mythic Muse Marketplace

Yo Ho A Pirate Crew for Me

And a Pirate Crew for You Too

A voyage to bring your Muse to the Market is best in the company of your Pirate Crew. (image by author)

Creativity is often described as a deep flow state between you and your Muse. It’s an amazing experience where you lose track of time and space and instead exist inside this perfect wave of creativity.

Who wouldn’t want more of that?

But here is the thing, these peak creation moments are well documented by those expert at cultivating them. And they report that flow is only sustainable for a couple of hours at best*. And yet most of us work more hours than that in our day.

What do we do with the rest of our time? We cultivate our creative allies, those who are helping us bring our Muse to the Marketplace.

Your allies fall into one of two types.

Your Mythic Audience. These are your customers, eager for your Muse, waiting for your arrival at the Marketplace.

Your Pirate Crew. These are team mates who are are on this voyage with you. They are helping you to bring your Muse to the Marketplace.

Today we are going to talk about your Pirate Crew.

A mythic voyage through the Sea of Creativity can be a lonely one. You are of course in the creative company of your Muse and this is an extraordinarily relationship. Your Muse is a creative idea that it is up to you do something about. And as you travel with her you will deepen into a rich and fulfilling relationship.

In fact, today we could be writing all about that, describing your Muse, her likes and dislikes, quirks and challenges. Your Muse is your primary creative work relationship. Learning how to cultivate your relationship for maximum collaboration and flow is vitally important.

But as I said, sailing the Sea of Creativity can be lonely. Thus I recommend a stop at the Isle of Who to recruit your Pirate Crew. A Pirate Crew is comprised of a few important people.

The First Mate

This is your second in command, the person who understands what you are shipping almost as well as you do. Someone you can Muse over ideas and decisions together.

Often this is your greatest cheerleader. When you feel lost or discouraged, this is the person you can count on to encourage you to keep going.

My Pirate First Mate is my friend and collaborator Laura. She not only encourages me daily to do my creative Musing, she often takes on some of the goals and tasks for my mythically big project. I can count on her to make sure we can successfully navigate the Sea of Monsters without being sunk by the many obstacles ahead on our path.

The Pirate Quartermaster

Your Pirate Quartermaster leads the way on boarding parties and kept track of all prizes or booty. The Quartermaster also determines what prize is worth receiving. This is the person to talk to about setting the price for your Muse at the Marketplace. This person can be a money master, someone who understands finances.

Sometimes this represents your very first customer. Finding your first customer early, perhaps even before you set sail can be very helpful. Your Quartermaster can give valuable feedback on the financial sustainability of your Muse.

My Quartermaster aka Muse Money Tracker aka First Customer is Christina. She not only engages with all my classes and creative doings, she also is a valuable coach for setting and sticking to my price point guns. I like to give everything away. She reminds me kindly but firmly that my Muse has value and needs to be around beyond my impulsive desires to gift it away to everyone.

The Pirate Gunner

Pirate Gunners are skilled at aiming the guns on a ship. Sailing to the Marketplace, this represents someone who is a marketer, the person best able to shoot out an irresistible invitation to attract customers who will trade treasure for your Muse.

My Gunner aka Muse Marketer has been me up until now. In part because I am the only one who fully comprehends my Muse, and in part from my reluctance to talk about it. I am NOT the best choice for this role without a major shift in identity. I am keeping a lookout for a Pirate Gunner for my crew.

The Sea Artist

Your Sea Artist is anyone who can maneuver ships over great distances with little or no difficulty. An expert sailor. A seasoned captain aka entrepreneur, one who has sailed the sea constantly with their own Muse. This is your wise mentor.

My Sea Artist aka Muse Mentor has been Jane with her successfully bookshop. She has sailed this sea, bringing her Muse to a slightly different Marketplace, yet close enough that much of her wisdom applies to my Muse. I query my Sea Artist for advice and recommendations every week.

Another is Maia who is my inspiration for my books and journals. I know Jane in real life. I don’t know Maia, only her work. I can meet with Jane in person or online for specific advice. With Maia, I can follow the maps and landmarks of her voyage to the Marketplace, using it for an inspirational example. Both have value. I add this because sometimes we don’t yet personally know our Sea Artists. And I also know that you can reach out to a potential mentor. That’s exactly how I met Jane.

So there you have it. The Pirate Crew. With their help, you can successfully navigate the Sea of Creativity to reach the Marketplace. Without their help know that you must and can fulfill all these roles. (Some ships run lean in the beginning, and some Muses aka ideas are just right for a solo sail.) Still, it would be wise to seek a Sea Artist to provide wise council as you set sail. Don’t wait. Don’t be lonely on this voyage to the Marketplace.

And your Muse can help. You must just remember to ask her to inspire you as you approach each role. Here’s a list that you can give her:

Your Pirate Crew

  • Your First Mate (Chief Operations Officer)
  • Your Quartermaster (Chief Financial Officer)
  • Your Pirate Gunner (Marketeer)
  • Your Sea Artist (Wise mentor)

Set Sail!

*How long can you stay in flow state?

In a creative flow state, the mind works optimally for about 90 minutes to 2 hours. Focused periods alternated with brief periods of rest allow your brain to be its most efficient and creative without triggering burnout.
