Yes, I’ll marry you, but let’s take it easy!
My grandparents’ wedding.
This is a true story.
It happened to my grandparents. It was during the time of World War II. They told me about this story before they passed away. The story of their marriage was very amusing.
So the story took place between 1940 and 1945. The couple, in their early 20s, had already lived together for some time and even had 2 young children. Then one day, they decided it was time to get married.
The problem was that they lived in the mountains and about twenty kilometres from the nearest city. So the future groom decided to take his pedal bike, the family’s only means of transport, and go down to the city to schedule the wedding. Well said, better done. He returned at the end of the day with a smile from ear to ear, telling the bride that the wedding was scheduled, and now it was just a matter of waiting for the much-desired day.
The long-awaited day has finally arrived.
So very early in the morning, the whole family started preparing for the trip. The bride wore her best and only “going out” dress, shoes also for special occasions, and looked beautiful. After all, it wasn’t just another day. It was her day! The groom also dressed up in his only suit with tie and everything. The 2- and 4-year-old boys looked like little angels, they were so awesome and beautiful. Although, they didn’t feel very comfortable in those unusual clothes.
And there the journey began.
Twenty kilometres of dirt paths and trails through the mountains. The kids mounted the bicycle guided by their father who accompanied their mother on foot. A few hours later, they finally arrived in the village. Now all that was left was to get to the registry to get married. The kids were already exhausted. They finally reached the door that, once crossed, would change their lives. They enter single and leave married.
The registry office
“Good morning, Your Excellency, I don’t know if you remember that I was here a few days ago to set the date for our wedding. Well, here we are.”
“I certainly remember, and we will move forward without further delay.”
The employee immediately went to get a book and began to consult it. After a few minutes of her looking confused, she finally spoke.
“But… but Mr José, you came a day early, your wedding is tomorrow.”
The news fell like a bomb.
There they returned home, single as they had come. And the next day they had to repeat it all. Only this time MARRIED and happily married until death separated them at over 85 years of age. It was worth waiting. And I think the second trip didn’t discourage them because about 9 months later their third and last child was born.
Ancient times that are not always easy for us to understand…
