Xiaomi known for affordable smartphones is now making waves in the electric car arena with its first-ever model the Xiaomi SU7. Recently unveiled in Beijing the sedan boasts the company’s Modena Architecture and HyperEngine electric motors with impressive specs outperforming both Tesla and Porsche. The lineup includes the dual-motor all-wheel-drive SU7 Max and the single-motor rear-wheel-drive SU7.

While the prices are yet to be announced Xiaomi claims the SU7 Max has an 800km range and a rapid 0–100km/h acceleration of 2.78s surpassing competitors. The vehicle’s performance is attributed to a CATL 101kWh 800V high-voltage platform promising a 220km range with a 5-minute charge. The design team behind SU7 includes talents from BMW and Mercedes-Benz adding a touch of automotive expertise.

In terms of design the SU7 is similar in size to the BMW 5 series featuring distinctive color options and spacious interiors. Xiaomi emphasizes the “water droplet” headlamps and a unique rear brake light with 360 LEDs. The in-car entertainment system HyperOS powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8295 processor promises a seamless experience through a 16.1-inch 3K central screen and optional Xiaomi Pad tablets.

Xiaomi is also venturing into autonomous driving with the Xiaomi Pilot platform equipped with NVIDIA Drive Orin processors and advanced sensors including Lidar for enhanced detection capabilities. The company aims to conduct autonomous driving tests in 100 Chinese cities by the end of 2024.
