Summary

The website content provides creative writing prompts inspired by cards, encouraging writers to use tarot cards, saved greeting cards, or business cards as catalysts for their writing.

Abstract

This week's writing prompts on the website encourage writers to find inspiration in everyday objects, specifically cards. The author suggests using tarot cards to explore personal writing themes, reflecting on the significance of a saved greeting card, or considering the story behind a business card found in one's wallet. These prompts aim to spark creativity and provide a fresh approach to writing by connecting personal experiences with the symbolism and memories associated with different types of cards. Additionally, the website offers open writing hours hosted by the author and a colleague to support writers in their creative process.

Opinions

  • The author believes that leaving one's desk and engaging with the world can stimulate writing ideas.
  • Tarot cards are seen as a tool for creative writing, not just divination.
  • Saved greeting cards hold meaning and can be a source of inspiration for writing.
  • Business cards, though less common in the digital age, are viewed as potential story prompts.
  • The act of writing in response to these prompts is encouraged as a communal activity, with the website inviting writers to share their work and engage with others' responses.

Writing Prompts: Your Next Great Idea Is In The Cards

This week’s writing prompts find inspiration in everyday objects

When I’m looking to jumpstart some writing, I often find it helps to leave my desk and get out into the world. Taking a walk, or going to see some art, or talking to a friend can all wake my brain up a bit. But there are also lots of ideas right in our own homes, a thought that occurred to me when I noticed the deck of tarot cards that’s been sitting, untouched, on my writing desk for months.

This week, let’s think about cards. Yes, cards! I’ll show you what I mean:

THIS WEEK’S PROMPTS

Pick a card, any card

If you have a tarot deck handy, shuffle it while thinking about something you want to explore in your writing, and then select one card at random. Take a moment to look at the card. Notice all the details on it. Then, write what comes up for you. This does not have to be connected to the official divination-related meaning of the card! What does it mean to you? (If you don’t have tarot cards, use a regular old deck of playing cards.)

Have a Hallmark moment

Find a card someone has sent you that for whatever reason you still have. Why have you saved it? Did you like the image? Was there a meaningful message scrawled within? Are you just never sure what to do with all those Christmas cards people send? Maybe you want to meditate on what this card means to you, or maybe you want to respond to it in some way. It’s up to you.

Take my card

Look in your wallet (or the weird pile in your kitchen, or wherever!) and take out any business cards that have accumulated in there. Why do you have an actual business card, in this day and age? Was it someone you met at a networking event in 2019? Is it your card? Is it something you kept to remind you of something in particular? What comes up when you look at this card?

Need to set aside time to write to these prompts (or to write something else?) My colleague Harris Sockel and I will be hosting open writing hours on Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. ET, through March 31. You can use this meeting link to join (the passcode is: Medium).

Whenever you write to one of our prompts, feel free to add the tag “WriteHere” to your Medium piece, and/or put the link in the responses on this post! We can’t guarantee we’ll respond to every single one, but we love looking at them — and y’all should check out each other’s work! There’s some great stuff out there.

QUESTIONS ABOUT WRITE HERE?

Leave them in the responses and we will try to address them all. Don’t forget to check back here every Monday for new prompts and tips. And check back on Fridays, when we post highlights from creators’ responses to these prompts!
