Writing Prompts: You Have All The Material You Need

This week’s writing prompts are all about diving into your memories

What does it mean to have a “good memory”? I’ve always been a forgetful sort — to the point that my high school best friend memorized my locker combination so she could help when I forgot it, which somehow happened about once a week. But when it comes to the big important moments, I find I’m able to recall scenes and situations in great detail. I think this is because I alway keep a pretty detailed journal, and rereading it can spark recollections that would otherwise get buried in the undifferentiated muck of memory.

What about you? Do you keep a journal? Do you find it helps you remember things more clearly? Below are some prompts about memory, and the story possibilities that might be hiding there.

If you like, you can publish your work on Medium and add the tag Writehere. That way we can all find each others’ work on the Write Here page. You are also welcome to drop a link to your story in the responses to this post.

Need to set aside time to write to these prompts (or to write something else?) My colleague Harris Sockel and I will be hosting open writing hours on Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. ET, this week through March 31. You can use this meeting link to join (the passcode is: Medium). See you there!

THIS WEEK’S PROMPTS

What’s your earliest memory?

It’s okay if it’s vague, or if you don’t recall the context, or even if you’re sure if it really happened. Don’t think too much about it. Just write down what first comes to mind. What do you remember? How many of your senses can you access? Why do you think this memory stuck?

What was your first experience with work?

This might be your first job, whether that was formal employment or not. This might be the first time you remember having some work to do, however you define that. Or it might be what your child-self wanted to be when you grew up. How is this connected to the work you do now?

What do you remember about last week?

You don’t have to dig way into your primordial past to uncover something to write about. When you think about last week, what pops out? What was the most salient detail of the week, the moment you think you’ll remember in a few months or years?
