Writing One Baby Step at a Time

You don’t need to hit it out of the park on your first try.

Start from where you are, with what you have.

Take baby steps and see where they take you.

Up until relatively recently, I had been afraid to start writing again. Afraid that it would suck, and that I have nothing of interest or importance to say.

I’d been telling myself I just didn’t have it in me to write anymore. That writing, being a writer, was an old dream that no longer called to me. That I’d grown too rusty, and that I would not be able to oil the hinges enough to peck out anything of value.

But it’s that initial sentence above that brought me back to the keyboard a few months ago to do something other than play Words with Friends, read the daily news, and scroll through the social media musings, jokes, joys, and, more frequently, heartaches and tribulations of my family and friends.

The encouragement came from my mentor-who-doesn’t-know-he’s-my-mentor — author, speaker, and entrepreneur Mike Dooley. He urges us to simply take action, no matter how small or seemingly feeble, in the direction of our dreams, and let the Universe work its magic.

My dreams involve feeling joy. And fulfillment. My dreams involve making the rest of my life the best of my life…and looking forward to each new day for opportunities to learn, laugh, give and positively connect with others.

Maybe I can realize these dreams through writing, and maybe not. How many times in the past have I turned to writing as my hope and salvation, only to abandon it over and over again for months, even years, at a stretch? Indeed, what will make this time be any different?

I shrug. Maybe it won’t be. Maybe I’ll spout off a few posts, share a couple of ideas and experiences, then end up giving up on writing again.

Time will tell.

All I know is, the last 45 minutes of my life flew by and felt right. It felt good to see words appear across a blank screen again, knowing they came from me, and that through them I might be connecting with you — if not now, then maybe in something I write tomorrow, or next week, or next month.

Baby steps. There, I took a few, Universe. Work your magic.
