Writing: Is it a Real Job?
Illumination

Taking my seat in a restaurant waiting to be served, I noticed a young man and two ladies in the seat in front of me, the male asked, “And what do you ladies do?”
A female voice said, “I am a physical therapist, and she doesn’t have a real job?” pointing to her friend sitting beside her.
“I am a writer,” a timid but embarrassed voice said, her back to me.
“You haven’t published anything yet,” her friend scolds. “Why do you go around telling people you are a writer when you have no book to show for it.”
I wasn’t the only one feeling the heat from the tension her words of rebuke have caused, as the young male slowly got up and walked away, glancing back in embarrassment.
Silence took control as their waiter approached asking, “Make up your minds yet ladies?”
“The usual James, you know this is our girl’s night out,” the stronger voice said.
They ate in silence.
Minutes later while enjoying my meal, a voice said, “Hey I can’t find my wallet, will you get this until tomorrow,” digging through her handbag.
These words burst from her friend’s delayed anger, “Sorry, I don’t have a real job, so the money the magazine pays me for my weekly article isn’t real either.”
She paid her portion of the bill and walked out.
Be careful what you say, words have power. Our words are as powerful as water, as it is used to quench thirst and put out fires. Yes, words are that powerful. Use your power of words to build something positive, great, and powerful that uplift, encourage, motivate, enlighten, and instill hope.
This was inspired by something I read on medium. I forgot who the author was. Writing is a real job, because the money you received is real. Keep on writing writers, real money, or not. There are power in your words.
Thank you for reading this piece. I hope you enjoyed it.
