Writing Idea of The Day Challenge
Idea #6 — What constitutes a big story to you

“If you’re going to have a story, have a big story, or none at all.” — Joseph Campbell
Since I love to write fiction, my focus went to that arena. when I thought about the #6 challenge prompt, two things came to mind.
- A big story means a vast saga, a multigenerational story that covers a large sweep of time and landscape with a parade of characters, each with their own mini-novel enclosed. A big story of this type gives me pages and pages of adventure, mega-events, ordinary characters that become extraordinary through trial and tribulation. Innocence and evil are constant foes. Everything in a saga moves the story forward no matter the collateral damage left behind. The works of Tolkien is a prime example of a big story to me.
- The second type of story that leaves me with the impression of its bigness, is the story that leaves me breathless. The story, whether short or long, that impels me to feel the entire range of human emotion. So much so, it will forever be etched in my memory and demand my devotion. Flowers for Algernon was such a story to me.
