Writing for Medium Is a Side Hustle That’s All
Even Stephen King kept his day job before he made a full-time career out of writing.
Medium is a side hustle, and live with it!
Like many, I tried my best to understand and decode the algorithm behind Medium. Who wouldn’t try after reading many success stories of Medium writers making big money by what else, doing what we all love doing, writing?
I have seen many writers now badmouthing Medium and threaten to leave the writing platform if Medium doesn’t change. I hope you don’t because there is still money to be made here, but money shouldn’t be the only reason you are writing.
The truth is Medium is changing, as it should be. Otherwise, new players would one day pull the rug under its feet, so to speak, even Facebook will soon be starting a writing platform that pays writers and journalists.
Here is Why Writing for Medium is my side hustle and why I suggest you get over the idea of making it big here for your sanity as a writer.
And if Stephen King didn’t quit his day job, you should keep yours or create multiple income streams in making money online.

Definition of side hustle
A side job, also informally called a side hustle or side gig, is an additional job that a person takes and their primary job to supplement their income. — Wikipedia
The one thing that saved me during the pandemic is writing. I started a side hustle that allows me to hide behind my computer and cope with my feelings.
While I will continue to write here on Medium, I have tempered expectations for it being my bread and butter.
Writing isn’t the only side hustle. Here is a checklist to help you.
- Make a list of what you’re interested in.
- Decide early if you will invest money.

Why do I want to start a side hustle?
Ask yourself this important question?
Start by telling yourself what you want to do and why you want to do it, and then come up with some strategies you can implement to make it happen.
Take the time to reflect on your goals and life goal statements.
When I set my life goals, I write out what I aspire to become and where I want to meet those goals.
For example, my current life goal is to be a writer; people can learn through my life experiences and skills I can pass on. Sharing my writing hacks and ideas to help anyone consider writing as a side hustle or remote work.
Tip: I write a weekly summary of my progress toward these and add minor milestones to show for the work I’ve put in. I also take stock of how many hours I’ve spent online in the past week.
I compare this with the total amount of time I’ve spent online over the last year. This allows me to track any recurring negative trends and monitor any growth I’ve seen since I started focusing on these areas.

The question is, how do you start doing it? You’re still going to school, and you still have to do chores, pay your debt, etc. If you’re really good at your thing, this should be relatively easy.
If you’re not, you might find that there’s a lot more work upfront that you don’t want to do because you get satisfied from doing your thing.

Aside from the time commitment, which is minimal, there are many other benefits such as:
- Finding your passion: What better way to keep on doing what you love doing? Turning your passion into a side hustle can keep you motivated.

Medium writing is my side hustle.
I consider myself a successful writer here on Medium. I have made some friends, for starters. I also have become a top writer on several topics, such as social media and photography. I can share my life with readers, the life lessons I have learned along the way.
I haven’t made $100 per month, but I want to share an ILLUMINATION published story, Chosen for Further Distribution and I Know Where to Find It, which has earned me $47.31. I will not have if not for Medium.
I am forever grateful, especially to Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, a mentor, and friend to new writers here on Medium.

Takeaway
Whether you’re starting or thinking about becoming a freelance worker, it’s not as complicated as it may seem.
Working on a side hustle requires a bit of work and planning to make it work, but the benefits are well worth the effort.
Part of being a “side hustler” often includes having no idea where you’re going with one particular venture.
When you follow your muse and aesthetic, you’ll inevitably pick up the pieces when you hit a roadblock. It will be worth noting that all the pieces are essential to the “hustle” because, without one, you have nothing.
A side hustle means taking a risk with finding success. You can end up freaking out, though. I know I have. A side hustle involves constant exploration with little to no guidance as to where you’ll be able to land the next big win.
When I first began pursuing the side hustle, the options were very few. You either had to suck it up and endure the empty workdays or pull out your laptop and move into a job you dislike to feed your side hustle.
There hasn’t been a better time to tap into new side hustles than now. Here are some tips for those interested in starting a side hustle if you start here on Medium.
