Writing Down the Memories

Taking a stroll down memory lane is good for the soul

My mom loved to take pictures and videos with her 8mm camera to lovingly document all the big (and little) moments of her family’s lives, especially her kids.

Christmas, Halloween, Easter, New Year’s, summer vacation, birthdays, family BBQs were all captured for posterity on film or video.

One of my favorite memories was the moment my mom lined us all up in the hallway, turned on the lights on her trusty 8mm video camera and then captured our joy as we ran into the living room and got our first glimpse of the big Christmas tree and all the presents waiting underneath just waiting to be opened.

As we grew older, we got more camera shy, but we still liked to watch the old movies and laugh hysterically at our silly younger selves.

Recently, I’ve been gathering and looking over all my old family photos and starting to write about some of the memories they stir up for me. It’s amazing how quickly I can go back to a certain time and place and still feel the emotions of the past.

Remembering where we came from and our journey to the present is a worthy effort especially after all we’ve been through in the turbulent 2020’s.

By looking at our past, we remember all the good times we had with family and friends and recall that even in bad times there was also fun, laughter and love.

I often wish I could go back in time and talk with my parents, grandparents and other older relatives about their life experiences. I want to know more about how they lived and what they learned in life. I wish they had left journals and letters to go with all the pictures they left behind.

Key Message: Writing down your memories for your family can be one of the most rewarding projects you take on. Preserving the past and sharing life lessons learned is a precious gift to the next generation.

Taking pictures and videos is easy, interpreting the past with words takes more time. But it is so worth it!

So the next time you’re stumped for something to write, take a stroll down memory lane with your photos to spark some memories. Then start writing!
