Writing About Your Numbers on Medium Doesn’t Make You a Flasher or Braggart

And thanking people for reading is just good manners, not groveling

When I first signed on with Medium, some of the articles that got my attention the most were articles that talked about writers' experiences on Medium. I wanted to see if it was a viable option to make money.

What I generally came away with was yes, it was possible, but it’s a long game. And that seems to be the case. Frankly, I was surprised to see the rancor expressed by some about other writers posting numbers. To me, it was a learning tool and I took it with a grain of salt.

I recognize motive comes into play. If someone is padding their numbers in an effort to sell you some courses to enhance your sales they deserve disdain. Personally, whenever I have to pay money to make money, I’m generally leary.

One reason why I wanted to see writers show their sales numbers was to determine if it was worth it to put the time and effort necessary to make money on Medium.

I read enough to convince me to give it a shot. Then I jumped in and started writing. We all learn differently. Some learn by watching, some by hearing, and some by doing. Others learn by flushing money down the crapper. I’ve done some of the latter, but generally learn by doing.

Here’s the bottom line for me.

I write an article almost every day and hope people read it. No gimmicks. No attempt at manipulating the algorithm. Actually, I have no idea how to do that anyway. As far as schmoozing, I’m not a big believer in that. Ultimately, you have to find people who like what you’re writing.

As for thanking readers for reading your stuff, that’s not groveling. it’s just good manners.

About being distributed:

Most of my pieces are distributed now. My theory is it’s not because I’m a great writer, but because I’m writing about stuff people are interested in. As I’ve said before, for me this is a business. I’m in it to make money. That’s not the case with everyone and to each his own.

Here are the numbers, and I’m not wearing a trenchcoat.

I’m tracking to make over $500 this month. I’ll probably have about 50 pieces make over $100 and 150 make at least some money.

That’s not to brag, it’s to emphasize it’s a long game. Honestly, as much time as I spend on Medium, $500 is nothing to brag about.

I have close to 2000 followers and 5 referred members.

To those people who posted their numbers when I first was reading Medium, thanks. It gave me some perspective. And put some clothes on.
