Summary

The "Medium Friends Reading Club" is an initiative to increase earnings for writers on Medium by forming a community of "friends" who commit to reading and engaging with each other's content.

Abstract

The Medium platform is introducing a new "Medium Friends Reading Club," which aims to boost writers' earnings through a collaborative reading and engagement strategy. Writers are invited to upgrade their Medium accounts for an additional $10 per month to become "friends" of Medium. This status grants them a badge, signaling their commitment to the community and potentially attracting more followers and readers, which could lead to increased revenue. The club's mission is to foster a supportive environment where members read and promote each other's work, adhering to a set of rules that encourage active participation and mutual support. The initiative is based on the idea that by investing a little more financially and engaging consistently with other "friends," writers can significantly enhance their visibility and earnings on the platform.

If you like the idea of finally earning more money on Medium, and you can afford to try a little experiment; you’re invited to join the new “Medium Friends Reading Club” that I’m trying to start.

This opportunity is open to new writers who qualify, but especially to existing members who are less than content with the way their earnings fail to increase the way expected.

👉 First let me give you what you might consider the downside to what I’m proposing, before telling you about the potential to earn lots more money with your stories in 2024.

Joining this new “Medium Friends Reading Club” that I’m starting, requires you to upgrade your current Medium account, by paying an additional $10 a month.

WAIT!

Yes Sherry McGuinn, I’m talking to you too girlfriend.

I can just hear my girl Sherry bristling (and rightly so), at the thought of giving more money to Medium, when it clearly should be the other way around.

Believe me, anyone who thinks this way is not alone by a long shot!

But folks, if this club works out, and even just a few of us writers come together, we might actually start to see a huge increase in our earnings.

Here’s the thing —

Unfortunately, that just might mean having to invest a little more in ourselves, to try and this happen.

Medium has a new policy that allows us to upgrade our accounts, and become what they refer to as “friends” of Medium.

So, now, let’s talk about…

What is the logic in paying to become a friend of Medium?

Over the past couple of years, I’ve invested a multitude of hours every month, writing, publishing and engaging on Medium.

If all my monthly hours invested were equivalent to invested cash, I‘m already losing a lot more than an additional $10 a month.

All that time spent every month, trying to increase my earnings, could clearly be better spent somewhere else.

Nowadays, TIME is a really precious commodity 💰. But many of us are blowing an awful lot of it on Medium, with little or no reward for our efforts.

So instead of investing an excessive amount of time and energy on Medium in the same way I’ve done in the past; I’m choosing to invest an extra $10 to my monthly membership instead.

From what I’ve been able to determine from past stats; the key to our future earnings on Medium involve: Reading and engaging with a core group of existing followers on a regular basis.

Now that the option of becoming a Medium “friend” is available, the potential for writers to earn 4x as much is well worth exploring.

So lets consider how it works…

How can becoming a friend of Medium help earn you more money?

I think becoming a friend of Medium can help you earn more money, and that’s what I want to elaborate on.

You can get complete details on how “Become a Friend of Medium” was rolled out, and all the other specifics in the story written by Robin Wilding 💎.

He did a splendid job of breaking the whole thing down, in an informative, yet very humorous way.

For all you skeptics:

I suspect some of you are reading this information and still not viewing this idea as a smart investment in yourself?

I totally get it!

After all, who really wants to shell out more money than they’re already paying?

Obviously, not every writer will want to, or even be able to afford a $10 increase to their Medium membership every month.

👉 But for those of us who are willing to test the waters, and give this Medium experiment a try, this could possibly turn out to be more lucrative than you think.

Consider this:

1️ You pay $15 a month for an upgraded membership and Become a Friend of Medium

2️ The badge you receive, is displayed on your profile and attracts and helps build more followers

3️ More followers ultimately result in more readers, which ultimately results in more money

That’s apparently the logic that Medium is relying on, and honestly, it sounds pretty damn good.

📌 But just like the rest of us, I’ve been fooled before by the Medium gods, when it comes to the possibility of things changing for the better.

I intend to take things a step further, in order to ensure becoming a friend is really worth the cost.

I envision my future earnings…

Benefiting from the Medium Friends Reading Club

I have a strategic formula and plan of action for 2024. It includes me organizing even just a small group of Medium friends, to form this monthly reading club, exclusively devoted to “friends of Medium”.

I guess you could call this the club’s Mission Statement:

Even if my entire tribe of dedicated followers aren’t able to support this effort, the plan could still work.

This reading to earn more concept is actually in harmony with the conclusion I came to, when I wrote about the need to read more Medium stories.

Becoming a friend and joining the club could prove to be a benefit in many ways.

Writers receive a badge on their profile from Medium, when they become a friend of Medium, alerting the community to their upgraded status.

Instead of the star icon, your profile will display this adorable heart, just like you see in the picture (Sorry, but that “adorable” line seems to work on all the charity related infomercials).

Besides the badge that identifies you as a friend of Medium, joining my club is another way for the community to know your new friendship status.

To demonstrate what I mean, I published a story that will eventually contain a roster of the club members, and I plan to keep the page updated regularly.

Naturally, writers will be interested in learning which of their followers are also friends of Medium.

Why? Because…

👉 When one friend of Medium reads a story from another friend of Medium, they both end up getting 4x the earnings!

Although the list is lacking club members right now, I took the time to name 30 different writers who have already obtained their “friends of Medium” badges.

You can find them on this MEMBERS INVITED page.

Whenever you visit the above story, you’ll find the ongoing list of new names being added, once “friends” agree to be listed as club members.

The only criteria in joining the club, is that you have an upgraded account as a “friend” of Medium, and you agree to…

THE CLUB RULES:

👉 All club members will read no less than one story a day, written by another member who belongs to the club.

👉 Members will diversify their reading selections, by spreading the love among as many different writer friends as possible.

👉 Members must include a non-invasive link on their stories, promoting the club, in whatever way they choose (See Note below for free logo).

In case you’re wondering, I won’t be policing who is following the rules.

That’s definitely not my plan, so for the time being, things will be done on the honor system.

The main point to keep in mind about the Medium Friends Reading Club, is that our goal is to help one another earn more money.

📌 Cheating the system doesn’t help anyone.

On the other hand, following the rules will ensure that we consistently manage to read and support our existing “friend” followers, while leaving time to read and engage with other Medium writers as usual.

As the club’s founder, and publisher of more than 1200 stories, I’ll personally be dedicating less time to writing, and a whole lot of time to reading club member stories.

And of course, I can think of lots and lots of creative ways to promote the stories after I read them.

But don’t think for a moment, that I’ll stop writing and publishing great content myself.

Both my Justiss Goode | Story Curator profile, and my Best Recycled News profile, will continue to write and publish enjoyable stories for your reading pleasure.

With the dedication and commitment of everyone involved, even a small, tight knit group of readers, can make this reading club a success.

Are you thinking about joining now…?

Final Thoughts

Thanks to my new reading club, I’ll be relying on a surefire formula to help increase my earnings on Medium and get the most money I can for the stories I write.

For the record, here it is:

Write good content

Use decent formatting

Publish regularly

Share what I write

Read other writers

Engage with their writing

Share what I read
