Writers’ Blokke To Remain Status Quo
As this publication has grown into what it is now, I’ve received numerous enquiries, as well as requests, about the direction Writers’ Blokke (WB) will be taking moving forward. You may be asking what exactly do I mean when I say direction?
Well, it’s basically what WB stands for as a publication, its place in the whole Medium ecosystem and my own personal goals for this small publication that I started just over a year plus ago.
Let me start again by saying that I never expected WB to be the size that it is now. We have over 2,000 plus followers that consist of writers and readers and although it’s very small if compared to famous publications like The Ascent, The Startup, The Writing Cooperative, P.S. I Love You, and the likes that boast followers ranging from 5 to 6 figures, it’s still a big enough number for me.
If I’m to be perfectly honest, I didn’t even think that this publication would hit 1,000 followers.
It’s not that I’m not ambitious but rather, it’s that I never intended this publication to become huge like the ones I just mentioned. It’s for that reason that I created and started this publication in the first place, for it to be a place where any writer (new or old) can house their articles that may otherwise, not have a publication to call home.
So, to answer the queries and requests that I’ve received so far, WB will remain as status quo.
Meaning, it will be functioning the same way as it always has. It will be a publication that is open to all and will accept any article, as long as it follows the publishing guidelines set out by both this publication, as well as by Medium.
I understand that as the publication grows, the need to adhere to a ‘higher’ standard also becomes more natural. However, if I were to do that, it defeats the purpose of this publication in the first place.
It was never meant to be the next The Ascent or The Startup where writers wait for weeks just to find out if their submissions have been accepted or rejected. I never imposed strict formatting guides on writers whenever they submit articles. WB was meant for writers to have a home for any of their ‘homeless’ articles, as well as a platform for the newer writers to get started in publishing with publications.
The goal was always for writers to eventually move on to bigger and better publications once they’ve learned the trade and have improved their writing. I have never once felt sad or angry when a writer who used to regularly publish with WB suddenly just stops publishing because I see that they’re now publishing with bigger publications.
That has always been the aim of WB.
In the event WB becomes bigger to the point of hitting a 5-figure following, I still don’t see a need to change how the publication approaches its writers. Again, as long as submissions are according to the guidelines set out by WB and Medium, it will all be accepted.
And honestly, I’ve had the privilege and honour to have some well-known writers publish their articles with WB and it shows that even an established writer sees the value WB brings for other writers.
Which is why WB will remain as it is for the time being. If ever a time comes where the need to change direction arises, you will all be the first to know.
Until that day comes, keep writing, keep publishing, and keep improving.
Regards, Benny
