Write With Flair: Choose a Colorful Pen
When life presents stress writers create notes with an artistic tilt and they transform redundant notes into a positive focused activity.

Change is constant. Life morphs in a flash. Sometimes the choice is yours and at other times, your opinion seems to lack an influence in a decided outcome. The little shifts of power variants you have control over develop your mind’s ability to adapt. Adaptation and creativity inspire writers to engage in varied ways of expression.
The opportunity to mix life up stimulates a healthy mind. From color pens to varieties and textures of paper, you control your muse.
Each shift to a positive mindset and another way to complete a task, increases your synaptogenesis formation of brain neuronal connections. As the brain continues with healthy plasticity, the ability to adapt advances and modifies the pathways within the brain.
The power to decide boosts personal growth and enhances your purpose. A writer owns the ability to opt for how and when they take notes, write articles, or read.
For instance, the word documents, the file card holders, and the journals are chock full of ideas. They wait for you to pick them up. They are inspiration from long ago, to a recent addition to your collection of ideas.
According to Kolb and Gibb, “A wide range of sensory and motor experiences can produce long-lasting plastic changes in the brain” (2011).
To switch up a routine is good for the brain. The brain needs to be stimulated in healthy, focused ways to keep present and agile. In addition, alter the reaction to experiences and you increase the plasticity of the brain. In the note-taking world, change is good for the mind.
The multiple signals all point to what works best:
That change motivates me in the freedom of choice.
Several creative mugs rest upon my desk (recycled from the coffee days once they developed a chip), full of pens and pencils. Within reach, my hands never lack inspiration from the myriad of choices: colors, tips, and styles wait for me to choose.
As a visual person, my eyes see shades of color. A variety of hues tends to be prominent in my artistic work as well as in my creative nature when education is directive. It enhances the visual appreciation. While black and white remains amazing in the shades of grey, the beauty of color inspires vivid description.
Continuity is apparent in my work. I love variety. Healthy, free will choices to create change are preferable to chaos-created change. Since experiences recently include both styles of change, my brain set to work in how to create a new way adapt.
Instead of frustration with forced modification of life experiences, I began to envision what works. So, when creative words refused to surface and my mind hits a wall with any form of writing I need to pay attention.
Shortly after the first signal, an attitude shows up. My thoughts become foggy. My goals seemed to be at odds with the world’s issues.
When my creative energy is zapped, I remember to pay attention to the signals my body is sending. The multiple signals all point to what works best: That change motivates me in the freedom of choice.

Instead of my laptop to take notes, read, or write, my fingers instinctively reached for a pen. A blue, smooth writing BIC pen. I grabbed my new journal to write my notes. The smooth-toothed white, lined paper took to the ink like the sun on my face after leaving an air conditioned building.
Each graceful movement of the pen, emboldened my hand jot notes down as I read. The gift of touch and the sense of sight combined to create a beautiful captured expression of thought.
Rather than a hectic rush to finish notes, my brain felt revived and renewed. Change created a surge of study and exploration. The freedom to choose variety felt free and fun.
A tiny note of history: My sixth surgery in six years took place at the end of September. Repeated surgeries on my right and left hands and arms left me with relearning how to hold a pen, how to type with braces on, and the freedom to write whenever I wanted restricted to how much I could tolerate.
The last surgery, finally, my wrist and arm are at 85% healed. The good news is I am writing again, the negative news, the arthritis on my right hand (thumb) is inflamed.
Despair tried to take over. However, I saw the opportunity to breathe through pain and see how long I could go before I needed my thumb brace. I managed three pages of notes.
Instead of frustration with forced change, I began to envision what works.
As my thumb would ache, I stopped writing and read the book. Once I felt inspired with a thought on what I read, I picked up the beautiful inked pen and began writing. The smooth ink helped me write with less pain.
In the spirit of variety, I choose a brick red pen to write key principles. They ink contrasted with the blue and my mind delighted in the creative alteration.
Remember how the brain functions and adapts? We have the gift to ensure growth throughout life. The little choices we make, which we have control over, such as what style of writing we will do, where we will write, and how often we write are the types of concepts to focus upon. Find the positive to direct your thoughts and you’ll find growth happens at a consistent rate.
Kolb & Gibb remind us that, “Synaptogenesis continues at a steady rate throughout a person’s lifetime” (2011).
In whatever capacity you find yourself, may you find the grace and joy in the change up of your creativity. As I pull out my notes from last night, my mind will cherish the joy of note-taking, the memory of my creative experience, and the potential articles a simple shift in my paradigm encouraged.
What pen will you use to write with next? Do you have an experience writing or creating with specific materials, which encouraged creativity? I’d love to hear what you have to share.
