After analyzing hundreds of posts, I have found that viral content contains the following features.

  2. It appeals to readers of all ages and backgrounds.
  3. It provides value to every single person.

I also spoke to a few hundred writers to know why do they share articles online. They gave me the following answers.

  2. To define themselves to others.
  3. To get their voices heard.
  4. To feel involved in the world.

Writers who regularly share their content can be found doing the following things.

  2. They advise or give helpful tips.
  3. They inspire the world with their quotes, images, and written stuff.
  4. They share a lot of facts.
  5. They unite with others or become a part of the tribes.

Viral Writing Is Rare

With these few things in mind, I have started feeling that viral posts have become rare. Out of every 30 million articles published on a daily basis, only 5 to 8 percent go viral. In order to make your stories be one of them, you will have to remember a couple of things.

1. Lists Are Still Ruling

It’s safe to say that lists are ruling and may continue ruling in the next few years. Let’s take the example of Buzzfeed. Every article written and published on this site goes viral, and most of the posts are list-based. If you carefully review this site, then you will get to know that writers writing listicles make thousands of dollars per post. Some of its posts get up to 10 million views and over 2 million shares.

How To Write Like Buzzfeed?

Here are a couple of tips.

  1. Work on the headline and don’t be afraid of listicles.
  2. Write content that provokes emotions.
  3. Use multiple images and cite them properly.

2. Become An Expert

It is good to be awesome, but not all of us can become experts overnight. Obviously, you will have to spend months or years in the writing industry to gain a good reputation. Let’s take the example of the New York Times. This publishing giant has some of the finest and well-versed writers and editors. If you carefully observe, then you will get to know that the word ‘love’ is used in many of its posts. This word leaves a good impact on the reader, so you can often use it in your articles. Some other well-performing posts are on travel. This is one of the most underrated niches. Travel articles get more than 300k shares on social media every month.

How To Write Like The New York Times?

Here are a few easy ways.

  1. Share the love with the world and keep giving them tips on how to strengthen their relationships with each other.
  2. Writing travel articles is also a good idea, but these should not be generic. Instead, your focus should be on writing personal travel stories.
  3. Visually rich posts with inspiring graphics also go well.
