A publication where writing is part of our healing and recovery

PLEASE NOTE: Found In My Journal has new submission guidelines and processes for becoming a writer. Don’t request to be a FIMJ writer through this story.

Please read the new story here:

Thank you for your interest in contributing to Found In My Journal!

What’s hiding in your journal, diaries, or old unpublished stories? Are there thoughts you couldn’t understand? Words scribbled on the back of a photo and tucked away?

What will you find? A soulful poem, story prompt, or expression of emotions too powerful at the time? What do you see now?

Or maybe you will find yourself.

That is who we are. A family of writers brought together by each other’s words through a chance click on a random story. Through words, we find connection, belonging, and support while writing ourselves toward growth. In our writing, we find ourselves.

Our team shares a common thread of reaching life’s rock bottom and using words as ladders to climb back to the top. We believe in sharing our recovery and healing.

Journaling can be a pivotal part of discovery, and we believe words are the most powerful tool we have. Because of that, we invite all submissions of all genres. If it came from a journal, it belongs here.

What We’re Looking For

Original, unpublished work that shares a fresh perspective of a personal story. Unique fiction or short stories and clever prose poetry. We accept personal essays, short stories, poetry, creative fiction, and/or non-fiction.

As the name implies, we are open to all stories that have been or could be, in your journal. We hope to foster a community of collective healers on any kind of journey to living a better and more complete life. This includes trauma, addiction, any mental illness, and/or general life musings.

We look forward to hearing from you and reading your stories. Please follow the style guidelines below.

Submission Guidelines

Headlines

  • Headlines must be in Title Case. You can use Title Case Converter to be sure.
  • Subhead must be sentence case by highlighting the subhead and formatting with the small T.
  • Kickers are fine — but must be ALL CAPS. If you don’t know how you don’t need one.

Photos and Images

  • You must have the rights to use any images — see Medium Guidelines regarding images.
  • Credit all images — even if they are provided by you.
  • You are welcome to insert images in your stories, but keep it to a minimum and only if they add value to your story.
  • You can insert one story card to promote another story of yours at the bottom of your story. Like this one:

Proofing and Editing

This is a publication to share your thoughts, explore within, and we offer a long leash with which to do that.

HOWEVER, we don’t have the time or manpower to fix and edit your piece, and like any publication, it makes us sad when a potentially good story is lost to spelling and grammatical errors.

  • Take your time
  • Use an aid like Grammarly or ProWritingAid.
  • Read it out loud
  • Have someone else read it
  • Use the Read aloud option on your computer

We all make mistakes, but they are greatly minimized by making the effort.

Should your submission have too many errors, we will ask you to clean it up before considering it.

We are looking forward to hearing from you.
