About Us
A Thousand Lives is a publication devoted to spreading the word about books. Underpinning our ethos is the belief that a good book can change the world. And for this to happen, and for everyone to benefit from books, we, as writers and readers, must spread the word.
Whether that’s in the form of traditional book reviews, author profiles recommendations or listicles — our central aim is to provide stories where readers will benefit from reading about a book they are yet to discover.
We believe reading is an educational tool — regardless of the genre — and want to spread awareness about great books to likeminded people.
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” — George R.R Martin
Stories We Accept 📚
We’re not fussy — basically — if it’s about books then we’ll probably publish it, but we are particularly looking for book reviews and recommendations.
Specifically — we also want to use this space to showcase the work of less established and up and coming writers — as we feel there is a gap on Medium for this. Whether this is through writing advanced reader copy reviews, author profiles or articles about the writing process, we are open to all ideas.
Also, if you are a writer and would like to be featured — please contact us.
Alternatively, if you are a book reviewer, or get your ARC’s (advanced reader copies) from Netgalley we will happily post your reviews here for the chance for you to earn something and for the author to gain greater recognition.
Here are some general ideas for what we will publish:
- Book reviews — of all genres, including ARC’s.
- Book recommendation lists — be creative! Think beyond 20 books you must read before you die but something like 10 Books to Read When you Are Going Through a Transitional Stage type lists
- Stories about authors (or written by authors) about the writing process
- Author profiles — writing about an author whose work you love
- Interviews — with writers big or small
- Stories about reading — what it means to you, your relationship to it and the benefits
- Writing — either on the process behind writing a book and how to start, or freelance writing and maintaining motivation and inspiration
This is a rough guide but if it’s about books chances are, we’ll probably publish it. If you want to explore an idea or pitch something to us, please get in touch.
Submission and Guidelines
Stories published by A Thousand Lives are owned by the author. Writers may remove stories from our publication at their discretion. However, if a writer continually does this then they will be removed.
Submissions must comply with Medium’s Rules, Ad-Free Policy, Content Guidelines, and Curation Guidelines. Stories violating Medium’s rules will be reported. For help and guidance on how to correctly format your articles before submission, please refer to our own Style Guide.
Affiliate links and product endorsements must be appropriately disclosed in an obvious and unavoidable way — for example, at the beginning in a disclaimer. Failure to disclose affiliate links for promotional review is a violation of the law.
Stories may contain a maximum of three self-promotional links using Medium’s embedded card-style links. CTA (call to action) are acceptable but should be used sparingly and in an appropriate manner — eg, at the end of the story.
