Learning and lessons come from different sources in life. As we go through life, we meet different people, within and outside our family. In school, we look up to our teachers. We make friends. Along the way, we build our list of favorites. Sometimes we can easily pinpoint what we like about someone. We feel inspired by them. We want to be like them.

What we learn molds us into who we are. And sometimes we have the privilege of inspiring others.

My first influencers were from my family. I believe they nurtured good values in me. I learned the importance of time management from my grandma, reinforced by my mom. My mom showed me how kindness and generosity can take us far in life. She also made me strong with her unconditional love. My uncles taught me why family bonds matter through example — always showing up for each other, no matter what the circumstances. They taught me the importance of punctuality and effective communication.

Outside my family, I have learned a lot from my teachers. I was lucky to have one of my teachers, who also taught my mom, as my “godmother” and guardian. I learned the value of discipline from her. I can never forget all that she did for me when I was away from my family.

And it is not just family and teachers —my friends have also shaped who I am and this is evident from my 50-year-old friendships. The value of being there for each other, being reliable.

Then there are my ex-bosses from whom I learned so much. Let me not forget all my favorite authors who I am sure influence my writing in some way.

We all have our heroes! They influence who we are, the choices we make!

This week’s prompt is:

Write about someone who influenced you or inspired you

It can be a school/college teacher/family/friends/others — it can be anyone who taught you something that you value, something that made a big difference in your life. Maybe a habit, a character trait. The way you do something now. Any life lesson that you hold close to your heart.

It can be a writer who inspires you. It can even be someone you admire for what they stand for.

Be as descriptive as you can!

We want to know who inspires/influences you!

You can write a story, an essay, a poem — anything.
