Wow, I made $800 on Medium in just 3 weeks!
I’m on track to make $1000 in a single month on Medium, and I simply can’t believe it.

I haven’t been able to dedicate quite as much time to Medium this month, and I was worried my income might drop.
On June 3, I started writing my twentieth novel. I spend on average three hours each morning working on the first draft, writing anything from 2,000 words to 2,400 words. That’s a lot of writing! Today marks my halfway point in the book — 40,000 words — which I’m super excited about.
But unlike in March, April, and May, when I could spend much of my morning and early afternoon writing stories for Medium, I’ve given my mornings over to writing my novel, simply because my prime time for being creative is in the morning, not the afternoon or evening, and certainly not at night.
It’s funny, I wrote my first three novels late at night. Like 10pm to 1am. Now I can barely keep my eyes open at 10pm. The beauty of getting older, right?
Anyway, so starting on June 3, I had to come up with a new strategy for Medium.
So what I’ve been doing is finding two hours in the evening to write my Medium stories for the following day, which I publish at different times from morning to night. Some days I publish three stories a day. Others, when I’m feeling really ambitious, I publish four. I don’t think I could ever publish five while I’m writing my novel!
This is a lot of writing. A whole hell of a lot. More writing than I’ve ever taken on in my entire life, I believe. Even when I was pursuing my MFA in Creative Writing. Even during that crazy time in 2013 I was working on four different novels at the same time.
I earned $288 the last week of May, right before I started working on the novel. That was my highest earnings ever for a single week. I absolutely did not think I would reach anything close to that in June while I was drafting the book.
I hoped, maybe, just maybe, I could maintain $200 or more each week, as long as I continued publishing three stories each day.
Until August, Medium is my only source of income, and I want to do everything I can to bring in some money the next two months.
Therefore I’ve created a schedule of sorts to keep me focused as I also work on my novel. A piece from the archive every morning. A new piece about fiction writing every day. A piece about Medium every day. And sometimes another piece in the evening, often quotes from famous authors to inspire you or pieces about grammar in your writing. I’m still writing lots and lots of content in the hopes that I can keep growing on Medium.
So I was ecstatic to earn $282 the first week of June, just six dollars less than the previous week, wow! What did I earn this last week? $244. A bit less than the record $288, but still a lot more than I expected, especially given that I can’t devote as much time to Medium right now as I was able to for most of May.
So what have I earned the past three weeks in total? $814!
And now comes the really exciting part. The milestone I never thought I would get to this fast since I started treating Medium like a part-time job on March 1. I made it to $940 in May. Certainly a lot higher than the $178 I earned in March and the $576 I earned in April.
But the big milestone is looking me in the face right now, and I’m trying not to get too swept up in it: I might actually cross $1000 on Medium for the first time in a single month. I’ll have for you the final verdict next week, but I’m excited to see how far I can take my earnings for the month of June!
For now, I’m thrilled to see a number as high as $814 in just three weeks’ time. That’s quite the growth from $231 in all of 2018 and just $29 this past January.
Medium remains super exciting for me every single day.
I love to share my writing with you and receive your thoughtful responses. I love to see what you’re writing and coming up with on a daily basis.
So many of you are taking way more chances than I am. When I finish the first draft of my novel on Sunday, July 7, I plan to start taking lots more chances, writing in different topics and bringing new angles to the pieces about fiction writing and Medium I currently write about.
I can’t wait to see what happens next on my Medium journey. Best of luck to you in yours!
