Would You Save Your Pet or Your Friend’s Life
We are biased even if we do not like it
Yes, we must be biased sometimes; otherwise, we will not be human. This is how we show our love, respect, and care. I have been asked why. I really do not have answers, but I can affirm that this is how life works anyway. Sometimes, there are no easy answers, even for us, the most intelligent creatures on earth.
Imagine this scenario: You have a magical power to control things with your mind. One day, you notice a runaway car rolling down the street toward one of your family members. In the car’s opposite path are six members of another family enjoying the weather outside! But they don’t see the car coming and can’t get out of the way in time.
Now, here’s the tough part — with your magic power, you can move the car, but it has to go toward the family of six members. You can also keep it rolling down its original path. Do you move it to hit the family or keep it rolling toward your beloved one? What a decision! Both choices seem unfair. We say family first; can we apply this rule here? Or is it not going to be ethical?! I have no answer; maybe you do!
Now, let’s change it a bit. What if your pet was in the path instead of your beloved one? You could save your pet by moving the car to hit your friend instead. Would you sacrifice your pet to save your friend? I know it’s really hard because we love our pets and our friends so much at the same time.
Why are choices like these so tricky? Well, there’s no completely right answer. Our brain tries to think of the logical choice to save the most people, but our heart also cares deeply about our friends and family (Human Bias). It’s like a tiny battle inside!
I know you are reading to this point and waiting for an answer. Finally, you want to know what I would do. To be honest, I really do not know. I only know one thing (we are biased even if we do not like it).
These tough discussions can teach us so much about ourselves. By digging through thought challenges without perfect solutions, we can learn about our preferences, priorities, emotions, and ethics. It shows that life isn’t always black and white. Feelings, emotions, and relationships matter just as much as numbers or right and wrong. And sometimes, what feels right for one person may not feel right for another. This is what makes us different from any other creature.
Most importantly, we try our best to understand different views. We can talk through tough choices to learn from each other. And remember — no matter what, we’re all in this together. Our friends, family, and community are so precious. I hope you never have to face a decision this hard. But knowing how to think it through helps us build a more ethical societal system.
