Would You Choose Differently If Every Moment Lasted Eternally?

Perhaps it’s like this — you wake to a day fresh, naked and new. The world waits in silence, its clock reset at the chime of midnight while city sleeps cradled within smog’s soft arms.

I grind my coffee beans with care — pressing steel into hardened nugget until I can release seeping colour like lifeblood. One cup left on windowsill as twilight slinks away for another twenty four hours.

The taste is bitter yet sweet; always beginning though never quite brand new — reminders of yesterday tumble through hollow crevices only time has been kind enough to fill each morning repetitively resets itself just so we might try again better and brighter than before

Here we are: a bloom amidst the thorns, singing hymns to frailty and strength. Day returns again — relentless tide rushing over footprints in sand; all it ever cared about was that you dared step forward once more.

Jean-Paul Sartre’s quote,

“There is only one day left, always starting over: it is given to us at dawn and taken away from us at dusk,”

is a profound reflection on the concept of time and our existence within it.

Sartre’s philosophy encourages us to understand the value and inherent beauty of passing moments and to make the most of the time we are granted on this Earth.

However, when juxtaposed with the concept of eternal recurrence, popularized by Friedrich Nietzsche, new avenues of contemplation open up. Nietzsche speculated that the universe is characterized by an eternal cycle, where every event that has occurred, is occurring, or will occur is doomed to repeat ad infinitum.

“Fellow man! Your whole life, like a sandglass, will always be reversed and will ever run out again,…”

This idea disrupts the notion of time as a linear construct, instead propelling us into an eternal loop of existence.

While Sartre’s perspective focuses on the significance of fleeting days, Nietzsche’s concept of eternal recurrence forces us to confront the idea of infinite repetition. This notion challenges us to evaluate the way we embrace each passing day.

If our actions and choices were to eternally repeat, how would we choose to live?

In light of this philosophical contrast, it becomes evident that Sartre’s perspective emphasizes the urgency of living in the present moment, recognizing the transient nature of time as it slips away from us with each passing day. Conversely, Nietzsche’s concept of eternal recurrence invites us to consider the everlasting implications of our choices and actions.
