Russian President Vladimir Putin declared Russia to be the first country in the world to have a successful vaccine against the COVID-19 virus. The vaccine has been named, ‘SPUTNIK V’ in the memory of Russian space satellite launched in 1957 that beat the world as the Earth’s first artificial satellite.
President Putin says that the vaccine is checked and offers reassurance by stating that one of his daughters was subject to the vaccine. She feels well. He claims that the vaccine would provide long term immunity.
How did Russia manage to launch a vaccine in such a short span of time?
Russia says that it was able to make vaccine so quickly because it is based on the previously developed Ebola vaccine.
Why the Russian COVID-19 vaccine is facing heavy backlash?
Russian COVID-19 vaccine hasn’t undergone Phase 3 clinical trials which is the most crucial test which aims to check if the vaccine would work on a large population. Russia has tested the vaccine on less than 300 humans.
Russian Association for Pharmaceutical companies published an open letter appealing to Russia to delay the approval as there have not been enough tests and it could be dangerous.
Oxford, Moderna, Pfizer, Novafax, etc. are all involved in heavy Phase 3 testing involving tens of thousands of people.
Russia, on the other hand, is just about to begin Phase 3 testing even though they declared victory that they have already got a vaccine. Russia plans to finish the vaccine administration to the key frontline worker by the end of August 2020.
Mass Vaccination is scheduled to begin in October 2020 along with the shipment of 1 billion doses order that has already been placed.

Assistant Director of the World Health Organisation, Jarvis Barbosa says, “A caution: The WHO can’t recommend the vaccine until it has analyzed all the information and data.”
American Health expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci said to the National Geographic, “I hope that the Russians have actually definitively proven that the vaccine is safe and effective. I seriously doubt that they have done that. People say why aren’t the Americans doing that? Well because we have a way of doing things in this country that we care about safety and we care about efficacy.”
Russian COVID-19 vaccine is not approved by the FDA.
