Would a Hostel support the Homeless.
What is the story with the homeless after the pandemic.
Urban. Some countries and cities around the world deal with chronic homelessness all the time. For example, The Bay Area.
Practical. How about a low cost hostel solution. A place for the night to keep people off the streets. A place to make money and look for work. Improve health and gain skills. Make contacts and network for opportunities.
Homeless.
Everyone is not homeless for the same reason.
Chronic homeless. People staying at the hostel long term could probably work there to pay bills as well as gain skills for the resume.
Short term homeless who probably just lost a job. They could probably afford to pay a small amount or get funding from government programs or NGOs. Protection from slipping into worse conditions.
Nightly. People who only need a place to sleep for the night and don’t like rigid facilities. Dislike confined places. Could probably sleep on the terrace under the glass roof. Good for inclement weather. Reduce local crime.
Families and Kids. These people would be put into a motel room based on government voucher programs. A hostel would be a good alternative.
In this case, diversity can make things more complicated.
Staff.
Support from various facets of society. Central rendezvous get together.
Official. Local government bureaucrats could visit for oversight. Local social workers for support without searching for anyone on the streets. Local professors to conduct classes.
Community. International volunteers with skills could assist in the short term. School and college students looking for experience. Members of the local neighborhood, church groups and law enforcement who can solve problems.
Anyone can have something to contribute.
Design.
Architecture to suit the people, weather, activities and neighborhood.
Perimeter. A hostel in a city block. With rooms all along the perimeter. Some rooms as bedrooms and others for activities.
Inner. Central courtyard with a pond, trees, greenery and fields. Entire thing under a glass roof for all kinds of weather.
Facilities.
Don’t need a lot of room for a fully functional space.
Bed Rooms with multiple bunk beds. Secure storage facilities. Clean full baths and efficient laundry facilities.
Central Courtyard with greenhouses for herbs and vegetables. Little pond for aquaponics. Outdoor mini sports areas. Fitness studio gym and calisthenics with yoga.
Music Room with radio, stereo and musical instruments. Tiny workshop with tools. Full kitchen with appliances and groceries.
Classrooms for seminar lectures and computer based online. Library with books and magazines. Daycare facilities for kids.
Activities.
Everyone is busy with something based on aptitude and inclination.
Cooking classes together and dining room. Fitness, exercise, aerobics and workouts sessions. Rest, relaxation, leisure, recreation to release tension. First aid and screening tests for health care.
Arts and Crafts and gardening skills. Pick up a hobby such a musical instrument or a sport or a craft. Sell fabrications online and locally.
Selling fruit and vegetables locally from the greenhouse. Sell clean fish from the pond. Manage and operate the local café restaurant and vie for food catering opportunities.
Income as tour guides for the tourist economy. Gig work for seniors and locally challenged. Provide pet shelter and manage a pet hostel for income.
Job Search and interviews scheduled at regular intervals. Interactive courses online for education. Learning trades at the workshop with practice sessions. Library books for theory and discussion.
Just a normal regular place so people break out of the rut towards a average life.
Economic Cycles.
The economy has a lot to do with problems in society.
Boom. During boom economic cycles the hostel would support more tourists and the homeless would be far fewer because of the ready availability of employment.
Bust. During recessions, the travel activity would decrease substantially as well as employment opportunities. Homeless people would have available rooms on priority.
Should be operational is any kind of economy.
Chance of success.
Would this have any chance of success. Would this work at all.
Profits. With enough funding, planning, organization, political support, media attention, staff, volunteers, technology, design, tools and support anything can have a certain degree of success.
Growth. Would this be economically viable. Would this reduce homelessness at all. Is there a venture capital fund supporting this kind of startup.
Would people appreciate, adapt and adjust to this kind of facility setting.
Novel Writing.
Use this as a setting to write your next novel.
Here is a list of Characters, Plots, Narratives, Themes and Settings. What solutions would you choose. What designs or facilities or activities. Where would you find funding and what would be the chances of success.
