Worn Out Sneakers

Take a journey of just a mile in my footsteps. Maybe then you will see. Who I am and what it feels like to be me.

Slip them on, Go ahead lace em’ up, How do they fit? Tie them real tight, They are worn in real good.

The laces are frayed and about to snap,

They couldn’t stand all the pressure you put me under,

Or all the weight of the blame you tried to place on me.

The soles are coming apart at the seams,

From every time you came unglued,

Yelled, called me names, or ignored me,

There is a rip in the tongue,

I had nearly bitten it off a thousand times,

So I didn’t say what was going through my head,

That I might regret later.

They are nice and dirty,

Carrying around all the mud you slung at me,

Every time we argued,

I caught it and wore it around,

Instead of fighting dirty.

The bottoms are nice and slick,

They wore down a little,

Every time you stepped on my feelings,

Or treated me like a doormat.

So you see,

Those shoes are kind of like you and me.

Familiar,

Broken in,

But if you don’t take care of them,

They will eventually need replacing,

I want you to get the feel for the shoes,

You made me walk around in,

On all the eggshells,

All the days we were together,

You tell me constantly,

You know how I feel,

Sometimes better than I know myself,

So tell me,

Can you read my mind now?

Does your heart feel like it is being ripped out of your chest?

Do your cheeks burn when the sting of your salty tears sneak down your face?

Are you sleeping okay?

Or do you hide your face in the pillow?

That way no one can hear you sob in the middle of the night,

Or is it one of your shower crying days?

You know the ones where you have to cry in the shower,

So no one can see the sorrow on your face,

Can you feel the heat of your eyes bore through you,

As they stare in judgement,

Scrutinizing every choice or move you have made,

Every step you take will be in the wrong direction,

You always say your way of doing things,

Is better than mine,

You are always right,

So now walk a mile in those worn-out sneakers,

Tell me how it feels to walk in my shoes.

“Do not judge her. You do not know what storm I have asked her to walk through.”
