Working Overseas: Is it Acceptable for a Man to Leave the Family?
Go or let it go?
Men in my home country dream of working overseas
For obvious reasons, there are limited opportunities here, and if there are — salary is not much alluring to give a better life to family.
I know a lot of guys who prefer to be in a different country to provide for their spouse and kids’ material blessings. And it is sad to think how some broke apart in terms of relationships.
It is not uncommon for a man to be transferred overseas for work.
- But what does that mean for the family he leaves behind?
- Is it acceptable for a man to leave his wife and children behind to further his career?
Here, we will explore this question from both sides to help you decide what is best for you and your family.
Go for it
There are certainly some advantages to working abroad. For one, it can be a great opportunity to earn more money.
I suppose it depends on what kind of profession you have — and what industry.
Nurses here in my home country are paid poorly — when they leave for Europe or the United States, they are rewarded financially.
The demand for nurses again is crazy.
It is one of the benefits of the pandemic disrupting us globally.
If you can transfer to your current company or find a new position that pays better than what you are making now, working overseas can help you provide a better life for your family.
Some guys I know have sent their kids to known college schools — and built a house in a neat subdivision. Additionally, working overseas can be a great way to advance your career.
If you are looking for a promotion or hoping to move up in your company, working in another country can give you the experience and exposure you need to do so.
Hold it
Of course, there are also some drawbacks to working overseas.
One of the biggest is that you will be away from your family. If you have young children, they may not even remember you by the time you come back!
And I remember somebody in the office said, whenever I see my father personally. He felt awkward when his dad places his arm around him.
The guy was not used to it.
Being away from your spouse can put a strain on your marriage. It can be hard to keep the spark alive when you can only see each other once or twice a year.
There are horrible stories I have seen about men having affairs — and eventually leaving their spouse back home for another girl.
It puts tears in my eyes upon hearing somebody sharing it at church.
Working in a foreign country can be tough on your mental health. Being away from everything and everyone (with no support system) can be very isolating and lonely most of the time.
Final Thoughts
There is no easy answer when it comes to whether or not it is acceptable for a man to leave his family to work overseas.
I am blessed to win opportunities locally.
If I had the desire to leave the country, I would bring my family — no matter how hard it is.
Generally, working abroad is a decision that needs to be made on a case-by-case basis.
Consider all the pros and cons before deciding — and ensure to communicate openly with your loved ones before buying that ticket.
