Working Full Time & Side Hustle Mayhem — One Way to Make it Simpler
Picking a side hustle according to your own strengths
On the 19th of January, I decided to give Vocal Media a try.
I did so for a few reasons — mainly to test the waters and add another platform to my writing portfolio.
What bothers me the most about these platforms is putting all your eggs in one basket.
It scares me to think that one or all could disappear in the blink of an eye.
I knew something had to change.
The main problem with side hustles is the lack of time to delve into different industries.
I don’t want to spend any more time writing because the hours do add up, and the quality of work starts to go down.
I have a full-time job and a family, so my priorities are very stretched at the moment, although manageable.
So the best option was to re-purpose some of my work and see how it goes. It seemed like the easiest option for the time being.
It’s helpful to have a backup of resources to use, so you don’t need to create more inspirational content.
I get washed out from coming up with new ideas.
My main job is being creative, and I am still creative again in the evenings — although it takes a different form.
The results so far with Vocal are minimal, but I’ve made a whole lot more on this platform than I did on Medium (when I started that is).

I believe my golden glory amount on Medium was 19 cents back then — very laughable now.
The reason I did so bad was because of the following points
- When I started Medium, I had no idea what to do
- I didn’t put effort into it
- My writing was pretty shit
- I didn’t believe in myself enough
- Making money on these things was for someone else, not for me.
I didn’t have a lot going for me, as you can see.
I’m not one of those people who started and a month later made it big.
Over time, I did a course, tried a few things, and used other people’s free advice, and it went upwards from that.
There has been a lot of negative writing about Vocal Media.
I haven’t been on the platform long enough to make further comments. But so far, it seems to be ok to me.
It would be nice to make as much money on this platform as I do on Medium, but that will come with some time and effort over the long term.
Key Take away
One piece of advice I can recommend to anyone seeking freedom from the corporate world is this -
Depending on your circumstances, you only have a limited amount of time and resource potential at your disposal.
Define something you are good at already — that could be writing or maybe illustrations or graphics.
Then, pick one platform and work on it for as long as possible. Do the required course, ask for advice and don’t give up.
As the saying goes, those who keep persisting through adversity find the answer. When things aren’t working for you, try something different.
I wish I could tell you the correct answer, but the algorithm changes keep us on our toes.
If your dream is to conquer this or some other platform, then keep it ongoing.
Write good content, be vigilant in writing to people and do courses if need be.
There is no simple solution, but to keep trying enough to exhaust any avenue or turn possible.
I do wish you a lot of luck on the journey.
At times it’s hard, but then we have moments of success; it makes an effort and time spent grinding all the sweeter.
